New HTC VIVE Focus Vision Headset Announced

HTC VIVE Focus Vision

Billed as their “most immersive spatial computing experience yet”, HTC has announced the VIVE Focus Vision, the latest addition to their XR headset lineup. The new gear offers a hybrid standalone/PCVR answer to the Meta Quest 3 and Sony’s PSVR2, with some healthy improvements over the VIVE Focus 3.

The VIVE Focus Vision is the consumer-oriented evolution of the VIVE Focus 3, an enterprise model targeted at business applications. While the Focus Vision inherits the Focus 3’s Snapdragon XR2 processor, 5k resolution, 120-degree field of view, and 90 Hz refresh rate, it adds stereo color passthrough, 4 GB of additional RAM, support for eye-tracking, and more. It also allows for up to 2TB of expandable storage via a MicroSD card slot.

The sensor suite has gotten a significant upgrade, with two eye-tracking cameras, two high-resolution full-color passthrough cameras, an infrared spotlight, and a depth sensor. The eye tracking enables the newly included automatic ITP adjustment, as well as foveated rendering in PC VR, which provides a boost to overall performance. The new depth sensor allows for spatially-interactive AR. Hand tracking in the Vision is augmented by an infrared spotlight, improving low-light fidelity for gestures. Like the Focus 3, the Vision will allow for body and face tracking when coupled with the appropriate accessories.

The VIVE Focus Vision will also offer DisplayPort compatibility, for lossless, more responsive performance at higher resolution. Making the connection will require an additional $160 adapter, which HTC is including with pre-orders of the headset. The Vision also comes with an improved cooling fan for quieter, more effective temperature management, and battery hot-swap capability via an auxiliary battery built into the visor that sustains the device while changing batteries.

The headstrap offers little new, with the same quick-release and dial-in adjustment design offered by its predecessor, but the new headset is compatible with all the same official accessories as the Focus 3. It has a weighted balance and allows for glasses.

HTC is aiming for the PC VR market here, with a heftier price tag and slightly higher specs than its main rivals Meta and Sony. The VIVE Focus Vision is a step up from either the Quest 3 or PSVR2 in its resolution and eye-tracking capabilities, has Sony’s DisplayPort compatibility, and the Quest’s wireless PC connection, but is a comparable unit in many regards.

VIVE Focus Vision pre-orders opened today at $999, with the DisplayMode-compatible wired streaming kit included. Pre-orders will also include a 7+ game bundle. The exact release date is unclear, but with the pre-order deal ending on October 17th, a late October ship date seems probable.
