Known to be one of the easiest classes to play in D&D, Rogues are the class when it comes to having the most simple-to-understand mechanics and abilities. For new players, just starting, Rogues are more likely to outclass even the fighter as the most player-friendly class to choose for their first campaign. Respecting that understanding, the new designs for Rogues have given the class even more variety than ever before and have allowed them to reflect a myriad of rogue-like concepts and tendencies stereotypical for their aesthetics.
Mechanics
The biggest change to the D&D Rogue is to their Cunning Strike: an ability that allows players to utilize their Sneak Attack. In a bid to make Rogues even more tactical than ever before, players can sacrifice one or more of their Sneak Attack damage-die (1d6 each) to instead inflict a condition. Poison will add the “poison condition” for one minute; Trip will knock enemies prone; and Withdraw will allow the Rogue to utilize the hit-and-run mechanic without provoking an attack of opportunity.
At higher levels, Rogues will pick up more of these maneuvers such as Daze, Knock Out, and Obscure. Other adjustments to the Rogues repertoire are just as exciting as previously seen. Steady Aim, once originally released in Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything, is now a core base mechanic for the class. Reliable Talent, the ability that guaranteed the class would be an expert in the skills they chose, will no longer be picked up at level 11 -having been moved down the levels to be acquired at level 7 instead.
Slippery Mind now grants a proficiency bonus to Charisma saves, as well as Wisdom. Stroke of Luck, the capstone ability for Rogues at level 20, has also received a tweak: allowing the character to both use the ability on saving throws as well as being able to re-roll missed attacks and turn them into critical hits.
Subclasses
Arcane Tricksters are no longer bound to a particular school of magic and can choose any spell from any spell list in the game. The changes to the Assassin make the subclass even more enjoyable and useful overall, buffing Assassinate and Death Strike to be more accessible and giving the former extra damages equal to the character’s class level. As well as making them more adept at poisoning opponents.
Soulknife remains relatively unchanged, with the only exception being that Psychic Blades now have a max range of 120 feet. The Thief subclass has gained the ability to activate magic items as a bonus action and can now utilize Stealth Attack to return to the shadows after an attack. Use Magic Device got a complete change and now grants an additional attunement slot to rogues -as well as adding the use of spell scrolls no matter its spell level or the character’s spell-casting level.
