Basil’s house is one of many locations in Omori, with Basil himself being a central character in the game’s story. Let’s take a look at where Basil’s house is, and why it’s so important to the plot of the game. This article will contain spoilers for the late-game plot of Omori.
Headspace
In Headspace, Basil’s house is south of the playground, with a sign directly south of the playground pointing towards the path to the house. Along the path to the house are several small gardens of flowers, one representing each member of the friend group: Basil, Hero, Aubrey, Kel, and Omori. The house itself is a shoe on a small island, with small potted plants scattered around it.
At the start of the game, Basil invites the friend group to visit his house. However, shortly after arriving there, events take a turn for the worse which leads to Basil going missing. This leads to the quest to find Basil and bring him home, which takes the group all across Headspace. The longer Basil stays missing, the more his plants and even his house wither away, though Omori can water the flowers leading to Basil’s house. At the same time, the longer Basil stays missing, the more the group forgets about him – by design.
On the Omori route, where Sunny suppresses his memories of the truth surrounding his older sister’s death, on One Day Left the Headspace version of Basil’s house will return to looking the same as it did at the start of the game. However, on the Sunny route, the house ultimately collapses and opens a hole to Black Space. Left over in the game’s files are some cutscenes that further flesh out the walk to the house, but even in the final version of the game, his house is only known as being old and empty.
Faraway Town
In Faraway Town, Basil’s house is the first house on the street southeast of Sunny’s house. Basil lives there with his grandma, as well as a caretaker named Polly. Much like the Headspace version of Basil’s house, its Faraway Town counterpart is surrounded by all kinds of plants and flowers. An egret orchid, often associated with Mari’s death, sits on a bedside table next to Basil’s grandma.
On One Day Left, Basil’s grandmother is hospitalized, and Basil locks himself in his room when he returns home. During the Sunny route, the friend group decides to stay at the house to be there for Basil, leading to a sleepover. The night before Moving Day is when Sunny is able to remember his involvement in Mari’s death. Upon Sunny waking up, the player is asked if they want to save Basil.
Basil’s house is also where the penultimate boss of the Sunny route can take place, against Basil himself. The guilt over Mari’s death and fear of losing Sunny have driven Basil to desperation. He and Sunny both are haunted by their own Somethings, to the point that the two fight. Basil ends up damaging Sunny’s right eye, and the two are taken to the hospital after Sunny passes out. From there, Sunny is able to fight the final boss of the Sunny route: none other than Omori himself.
Final Thoughts
Basil’s house is a very important location in the story of Omori, in both Headspace and the real world, in the Sunny route or in the Omori route. With how Sunny and Basil’s traumas are connected, and how desperately Basil wants to protect Sunny, this makes sense. Thankfully, in the true ending of the game, Sunny and Basil are able to start on the path to healing and forgiving themselves.
