With the approach of Dragon Age Veilguard, BioWare has given fans many exciting looks at the upcoming sequel. One of the most prominent companions for this upcoming game is the necromancer Emmrich Volkarin. As a character-driven RPG, the writers take great pains to give each game a well-rounded and diverse team of fighters to join the player character.
While the series is no stranger to giving players a morally grey mage for their party, Emmrich’s lore and characterization imply he will be a peculiar example. Furthermore, he and his order have a storied past before joining the team. Here is a breakdown of everything about Emmrich Volkarin for Dragon Age Veilguard.
The Character of Emmrich Volkarin
Emmrich Volkarin is a human Nevarran necromancer who will join the player characters’ party in Dragon Age Veilguard. Despite his stereotypically villainous profession, he uses his powers for the good of the realm. From the footage shown in trailers, he will also be a powerful ally.
Emmrich is a member of the Mourn Watch of Mortalitasi, a secretive coalition of necromancers that rule over Nevarra. Much like the ancient Egyptians, the religion of the Mortalitasi highly emphasizes death rites and mummification. While the Mortalitasi have never made a proper appearance within the mainline games, they have been a recurring faction within the lore and side materials.
Nick Boraine provides the voice of Emmrich, who also gave his talent to Colonel Norris from Modern Warfare. Emmrich’s talking skeletal servant, Manfred, assists him with his experiments and research. Critical Role DM Matthew Mercer voices Manfred. While a small example, it does highlight Veilguard’s move into a “campier” tone compared to the darker early games.
His Dragon Age Veilguard Role
Before his debut in Veilguard, Emmrich made two early appearances in Dragon Age tie-in stories. In the short story Down Among the Dead Men, he helps solve the mystery of a noble’s corpse being possessed and escaping. In another short story, Flame Eternal, he used his skill as a medium to lay a deceased couple to rest. Many other party members, such as Cassandra and Isabela, started as NPCs before their promotion to playable status.
From the game’s trailer, he quickly established his bone to pick with the enemy by raising an army of skeletons against a wave of foes. From his BioWare website description, his kit will focus on crowd control (even having a spell called “time slow”) and summoning minions to provide manpower. Given the stricter engine of previous Dragon Age titles, giving him a more unique kit will set Veilguard apart.
What Similar Companions Put Forward
Previous Dragon Age games have given gamers similar companions to Emmrich Volkarin, who can discern his character’s role. The franchise’s preeminent “dark mage” would be Morrigan, the forest witch who was another seeker of forbidden sorceries. She became a series icon for her sarcasm, evolving role, and compelling backstory.
The next iconic “dark mage” was Dorian Pavus. Dorian was a Tevinter noble, one of the most despised factions of Thedas, yet was a good person with noble intentions. Fans appreciated Dorian for his witty, upbeat demeanor and well-written LGBT representation.
In an IGN interview with director Corinne Busche, she described how Emmrich was written as a subversion to the traditional role of the “evil necromancer.” His role as one of the Mortalitasi taught him respect for the cycle of life and death, kindness, and respect. As with most Dragon Age characters, he strongly subverts the well-worn cliches and archetypes of the genre. Hopefully, his debut will live up to fans’ expectations.
