There is always something in every entry of a video game series that connects the stories in some way, shape, or form whether it’s a direct sequel like the Dead Space series or a new story that references previous games like Heisenberg commenting on Chris Redfield’s infamous boulder-punching skills in Resident Evil Village. This is not only very obvious with 2001’s The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons but is taken to a whole new level with the two Game Boy Color games.
The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons were released as some of the final games for the Game Boy Color. Aside from sharing a similar name, each game is actually different from the other while also maintaining quite a bit of similarity between the two. One of the most unique aspects of the iconic Game Boy Color games is that they can be linked together to unlock new gameplay! Let’s take a look at the differences and the unique connection between the two iconic games!
The Puzzles of Oracle of Ages
Oracle of Ages is a more puzzle-oriented adventure with Link using the Harp of Ages to travel between time to save the land of Labrynna after Nayru, the Oracle of Ages, is possessed by evil sorceress Veran. By using the Harp of Ages, players were able to see the world around them changing as they solved puzzles and conquered dungeons. It was such a beautiful detail added to the game that really sets it apart from other The Legend of Zelda games.
Oracle of Ages lets players use logic to figure out how to get around dungeons and the land of Labrynna. This is where seeing the world around you change really comes into play as players will need to travel through time to find a new way to enter dungeons or even plant a seed to help you on your journey when you travel to the future. Adding the environment around you as a key to solving one of the many puzzles in this game sets it apart from a lot of other Zelda games we’ve come to see.
The Action of Oracle of Seasons
Oracle of Seasons is a more action-oriented game with Link using the Rod of Seasons to save the land of Holodrum and Din, the Oracle of Seasons, who the terrifying General Onox kidnaps. The Temple of Time is then buried underground which causes the land of Holodrum to experience different seasons randomly throughout the game. Rather than traveling through time with the Harp of Ages, Link uses the Rod of Seasons to fight enemies and to affect the area’s seasons. This game focuses much more on action and fighting enemies rather than solving puzzles.
That’s not to say that Oracle of Seasons doesn’t have puzzles in it’s more action-packed game. In fact in Oracle of Seasons, you must use the power of the seasons to solve some puzzles or even use against enemies. When it comes down to it, Oracle of Seasons relies on players’ ability to fight enemies and use the magic they have to help get them through enemies, dungeons, and bosses.
How They Link
Despite these two games being released at the same time, and sharing a similar name they are both very different games. However, they also share a unique connection that causes them to link together (No pun intended)! Once you finish Oracle of Ages or Oracle of Seasons, you will be given a password that you can use to start a new game that unlocks new gameplay and even the true ending of the two games.
In the new game, you’ll get new codes and passwords from NPCs that you should write down as they’ll come in handy after beating the game! Once you beat Onox or Veran in your second game, the password you used to start the new game will unlock two new final bosses, Twinova and Ganon. Once you beat them, you’ll get another password that you can use to revisit the first game you played where you can use those new codes and passwords to find cheats as you play through the game OR use them with the Maku Tree to get all of the goodies you’ve earned through your adventure!
There are so many differences between these games, but being able to link them gives them a unique connection that makes beating these two Zelda games a must for any fans of the series. Whether you like action-packed games or breaking your brain with puzzles, both of these games are something to be enjoyed together rather than as singular games. Both games are now available to play on Game Boy Color and Nintendo Switch Online Plus!
