Why Echoes of Wisdom is a Contender for GOTY 2024

Echoes of Wisdom

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom has only been out for a little less than a week, but it has already established itself as a legitimate Game of the Year contender. Most Zelda games do contend for a lot of awards, but this one is different. Nintendo took a little bit of a risk with it, and it may pay off with an award early next year. It stacks up against good competition, but it is already one of the most beloved games of 2024.

Echoes of Wisdom Could Be Game of the Year

While the game is still fresh, it certainly seems like virtually everyone who has played it loves it. It has an 86 average on Metacritic, with an overwhelming majority of the scores being positive. Only a few are “mixed” with no bad reviews. An 86 certainly doesn’t imply that it will win, but it does suggest that the game has a strong chance of at least being nominated. It’s popular, critically acclaimed, and comes from a renowned and award-winning franchise. It’s a winning formula, and Game of the Year may have to acknowledge that.

It helps that The Legend of Zelda is often highly awarded and recognized. Each entry to the franchise strives to do something revolutionary with gaming. That, combined with making shocking use of the Nintendo Switch’s limited capabilities, led to a nomination and near win for Tears of the Kingdom last year. Echoes of Wisdom has done a similar thing, pushing the console to its limits and introducing revolutionary game mechanics and systems to the franchise. Games like Tears of the KingdomBreath of the Wild, and others have earned awards, and Echoes of Wisdom will likely follow suit.

Other Game of the Year Contenders

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is not alone in its quest to be dubbed the best game of the year, and there is admittedly some serious competition. Right now, Astro Bot is probably the favorite. There are other games that will give it and the latest Zelda game a run for their money, though. These include Black Myth: WukongSpace Marine II, Helldivers 2, and many others. Other games that haven’t been released yet, such as the Silent Hill 2 remake, Metaphor: ReFantazioCall of Duty: Black Ops 6, and Dragon Age: The Veilguard, could also contend.

2023 gets a lot of praise for having revolutionary games like Tears of the Kingdom, Spider-Man 2, and the eventual Game of the Year Baldur’s Gate 3. It was a stellar year for gaming, but 2024 has the potential to outdo it. It may not be as top-heavy as its predecessor, but it certainly is shaping up to be a very deep year with a lot of great games.

In Conclusion

Echoes of Wisdom has successfully won over fans of the franchise and gamers at large despite its unique and unprecedented take on the long-running series. For the first time, Princess Zelda is the main character. That has so far been warmly received, and it won’t be at all surprising if this game racks up hardware at the 2024 Game of the Year awards.
