Collegiate Rocket League Returns

Collegiate Rocket League

While fall might make sports fans think of football or the World Series, for collegiate esports programs October means the return of the Collegiate Rocket League. In addition to going for the glory of being crowned the best Rocket League team, players will be competing for a share of $50,000 in prizes.

A Change in Format

According to an announcement from Rocket League publisher Psyonix, returning players will notice some changes to CRL’s format. Noting that the Collegiate Rocket League has largely remained the same since launching in 2017, Psyonix is shifting the format to feature open competition throughout the semester. This is being done to ensure long-term sustainability and additional opportunities for more players to share in the event’s scholastic prizes. This year’s prize pool of $50,000 is nearly double last year’s pool of $30,000. Under the new system, the Collegiate Rocket League will be open to college teams in the United States, Canada, and Mexico and organized into a single conference. There will be four open tournaments leading up to a fall championship.

Two Days of Competition

When teams meet up for an open tournament, they can expect to participate in two days of competition. The first day is a double-elimination bracket with four pools. Two teams from each pool will advance to day two. The second day of play will see the top eight teams from day one facing off in a new double-elimination bracket. The top teams in each Open Tournament receive CRL points for their performance.

Tournament Schedule Announced

The dates for the four fall open Collegiate Rocket League tournaments have been announced with the first scheduled to take place this weekend on October 5 and 6. Tournament two will follow on October 12 and 13 with tournament three scheduled for October 19 and 20. After taking a week off, the final CRL open be held on November 2 and 3. The Fall Championship will feature the top eight points earning teams competing in a Single Elimination Bracket over two days to determine the Collegiate Rocket League Fall Champion. That tournament is scheduled for November 16 and 17.
