343 Industries Becomes Halo Studios, Switching to Unreal Engine 5

Halo Studios

343 Industries has officially rebranded as Halo Studios for future projects, leaving behind its former name. Also, there was unconfirmed news earlier this year that reported 343 Industries had plans to switch from the Slipcase to the Unreal Engine, though Microsoft did not confirm the report. Nevertheless, it has finally been officially announced that the studio will be using Unreal Engine 5 from now on.

Halo Studios’ Decision

Apparently, multiple future Unreal-powered projects will soon start development. The aging code of Slipcase posed a problem during the development period of the well-received First Person Shooter, Halo Infinite. The developers, formerly 343 Industries but now Halo Studios, are optimistic about the various improvements the Unreal Engine has received. ‘Halo Infinite was the last remnants of how we made Halo games in the past,’ says the Vice President and head of the studio, Pierre Hintze. ‘That was our recipe, and what we’re doing now, we’re changing the recipe.’

With a six-and-a-half-minute video of Halo graphics made from Unreal, 343 Industries has moved away from Slipcase and now intends to progress with the Unreal Engine, evidently because of standing out once more. However, not all of Halo Studios’ staff were content with the plans to transition from Slipcase, 95 staff were reportedly laid off not long after, and there was a conflict within the studio between those who were eager to switch to the Unreal Engine and those who were content to remain with Slipcase – so many rough times for the industry since planning the switch early last year.

What’s Next For Halo Studios

Halo Studios’ staff appear eager to see how far they can advance using the Unreal Engine. They aspire to regain the best-in-class status they held when Halo Infinite was released. The reason behind their rebranding is apparent – they aim to place more emphasis on the Halo franchise and ascertain where it will take them.

“Respectfully, some components of Slipspace are almost 25 years old,” explains Studio Art Director, Chris Matthews, in a recent interview. “Although 343 were developing it continuously, there are aspects of Unreal that Epic has been developing for some time, which are unavailable to us in Slipspace… One of the primary things we’re interested in is growing and expanding our world so players have more to interact with and more to experience. [Unreal technologies] offer us an opportunity to do that in a way that the industry hasn’t seen before. As artists, it’s incredibly exciting to do that work.”

Halo Infinite

From the tone, we can discern his eagerness to continue evolving Halo Infinite into something exceptional, a best-in-class. Overall, the Halo Studios team is experimenting with the Unreal Engine to determine if it will help them achieve their goals. Now that things have settled down in Halo Studios and there are no more conflicts, the newly dubbed gaming company, Halo Studios, is hiring again.

In Conclusion

They are offering positions for a creative director, lead game systems designer, senior technical designer, hard surface artist, technical artist, and senior UX designer. The vacancies are all currently advertised on Microsoft’s Careers site, so they are trying to make sweeping changes. After a rough time moving forward in the past due to internal conflicts, Halo Studios has simply jumped back on its feet after recovering, showing its unwavering determination to turn Halo Infinite into the best-in-class once again.
