Animal Crossing: New Horizons introduced several new characters to the series. The most wholesome of these greenhorns is Daisy Mae, a turnip-trading tusked boar. NPCs in Animal Crossing come in several forms, from villagers to shopkeepers. Some only appear weekly or through special circumstances/events, like Daisy. While she appears to be a snot-nosed runt, she performs a crucial duty in the game. Here is what you need to know about the little boar and her services.
Who is Daisy Mae?
Daisy Mae is a small orange boar who serves as a static special visitor. This means that unlike other visitors, such as Redd or Gulliver, she does not frequent your island at random intervals. Rather, Daisy Mae always appears on Sundays in the morning hours, starting from 5 A.M. During this time, you can find her wandering your island with a dribble of snot dangling from her nostril. If you want to speak with her, you must do so before noon as that is when she is scheduled to depart. It is not difficult to identify her, especially as she traipses about with a basket of turnips atop her head.
When you first meet Daisy Mae, she will introduce herself as the granddaughter of Sow Joan. The brown-coated boar Joan was an important and enduring NPC for much of the series’ history. The porcine duo share common blood and naming conventions: Daisy Mae references mortgage financing company Fannie Mae while Sow Joan alludes to the Dow Jones stock market index. Like other new characters C.J. and Flick, Daisy is the successor to a role her relative performed in previous Animal Crossing titles. For her, that role is bartering turnips, the epicenter of the game’s vast and intricate Stalk Market.
Daisy’s Role and The Stalk Market
Daisy Mae’s main function in Animal Crossing: New Horizons is selling turnips. Turnips play a huge role in Animal Crossing’s economy and are the primary way many players go from rags to riches. While these white vegetables can be eaten and used in cooking/crafting recipes, their main purpose is to be resold. As with the real-world stock market, Animal Crossing’s Stalk Market operates on buying low and selling high. The prices for her turnips usually land somewhere between 90 and 110 bells. They can be purchased in bulk, up to 100 per inventory slot. With the maximum amount of 40 slots, you can carry up to 4000 turnips on your person.
Turnip Price Patterns
To get the most bang for your bells, you must visit Timmy and Tommy. Inside their shop, you can ask them about the current selling point for turnips. For full efficiency, you need to do this twice daily, as the prices change at midnight and noon. Animal Crossing contains a hidden mechanic that creates a weekly curve for these selling prices. You can decipher the current selling pattern by carefully checking the daily price points for your turnips. This is not necessarily foolproof as some patterns follow similar trends. There are four main patterns of which you should be aware: Decreasing, Small-spike, Large-spike, and Random.
- Decreasing: This pattern starts with low selling prices that trend even lower as the week progresses. By the end of the week, your selling prices could be half of what you initially paid for your turnips. This is easily the worst of the 4 patterns and should motivate you to seek another player to help with unloading your hoard.
- Small-spike: The small-spike pattern starts with a lower sell price that can quickly rise, often around midweek. This pattern has good profit odds but needs to be carefully watched as your peak can happen earlier or later in the week. The peak can be between 140-200% of your purchase price. Selling prices will fall after the peak.
- Large-spike: Large-spikes have the most potential in terms of profit margins. The peak for a Large-spike will be between 200-600% of the purchase price. Afterward, there will be a rapid decline following the peak. Like the Small-spike, you need to carefully examine your selling prices as your spike can sometimes occur as early as Monday afternoon.
- Random: As the name suggests, the random pattern fluctuates with selling prices. There are usually 2 or 3 peaks throughout the week, but these will never exceed 140% of your purchase price. Early peaks often suggest this pattern, but keep checking throughout the week as it could also indicate a small or large spike.
Turnip-bout in Fairplay
There are some caveats to note regarding turnips. Turnips you purchase will expire after a week, meaning you cannot stockpile them for the future and wait for higher selling prices. Timmy and Tommy will not buy them on Sundays, so you must ensure you sell them before time runs out. Time travelers should be aware that setting the date of their Switch past the current week the turnips are bought will also cause them to perish. Unfortunately, turnips cannot be placed in storage, so you need to designate an area to keep them before selling. Many players will either plop them on the ground outside or inside their homes while they await decent selling prices.
Unlike earlier games in the series, turnips will not go rotten when you visit another player, even if they are in a different timezone. Should you have friends who also play New Horizons, this opens up greater market opportunities for both of you. This also makes it advantageous to seek out other Animal Crossing community members hosting island visits via wireless communications. While this greatly expands your ability to garner a huge profit, many players will request something in recompense to give you the time to unload your freight in their shops. No matter the path you choose, sell off your excess turnips before they expire, even if it means a smaller profit margin.
Daisy is No Bore
Daisy Mae is a cute character who performs a crucial role in the economy of New Horizons. While Daisy Mae succeeds her dear grandmother Joan’s turnip business, Joan is not completely absent in New Horizons. With the introduction of the Roost in the 2.0 Update, Joan now even shares a cup of coffee with her granddaughter if you invite her via an Amiibo card. Regardless, Daisy Mae is a welcome member added to Animal Crossing‘s ever-expanding roster of characters. She is a warm and endearing NPC who won over the hearts of many when she was introduced. If you keep your snout to the ground, Daisy may be your gateway to becoming a bell-ionaire.
