Collegiate Rocket League

The second week of the Collegiate Rocket League saw its share of surprises with favorites like Maryville University failing to reach the finals and dark horse teams like Concord University surging ahead in the points standings.

Maryville University, located in St. Louis, Missouri, was the winner of the first Collegiate Rocket League open tournament, taking home 16 points. The team was stunned by Oklahoma Christian University in round 1. Oklahoma Christian came into the second open tournament with no team points, but pounced on Maryville, defeating them 2-0 and sending them to the lower bracket.

Shaking off the loss, Maryville battled back through the lower bracket defeating the Harrisburg Storm and the George Mason Patriots before facing off against Oklahoma Christian again. Oklahoma had been sent to the lower bracket after falling to the St. Clair University Green team. In the rematch, it was once again Concord who came out on top, this time with a 3-2 victory. With the victory, Oklahoma joined St. Clair as the Pool 1 Qualifiers.

Familiar Faces in Pool 2

Pool 2 saw last year’s champions, Northwood University’s Blue team, shine. Assigned to the lower bracket, Northwood blanked both Ole Miss and Mizzou with 2-0 scores and beat Illinois State 2-1. A 3-0 victory over Southern Mississippi in the lower bracket final gave them the go-ahead for day two.

The Pool 2 upper bracket belonged to Ball State, who came into the tournament with 3 team points. The team beat Illinois State 2-0 and Southern Mississippi 3-0 to make it to the second day of Collegiate Rocket League play.

Victory Starts in Pool 3

Eventual tournament winners Concord University started in Pool 3. A 2-0 victory over  Kennesaw State and a 3-2 win over St. Clair’s Gold team was all it took for Concord to make it to day two.

The other qualifier from Pool 3, Akron’s Blue team had a little harder path. The team started in the upper bracket but fell 2-1 against St. Clair Gold. Fighting back in the lower bracket, the team went on to defeat Nichols College and Kennesaw State before getting revenge and eliminating St. Clair Gold to move on in the Collegiate Rocket League.

West Virginia Takes Pool 4

West Virginia was the top team in the tournament’s four pool, defeating both Columbia College and Stockton in the upper bracket. The team had placed in the first open tournament and came into the second with four Collegiate Rocket League points.

The other Pool 4 qualifier was Davenport University’s Black team. The team began in the upper bracket, but a first-round loss to Stockton sent them to the lower bracket. Once there, the team dominated, never letting an opponent take a game and winning its next three matches 2-0, 2-0 and 3-0, respectively.

Day 2 Goes to Concord

Concord University didn’t go undefeated on day two but still managed to walk away as the tournament champions. Starting in the upper bracket, the team beat Ball State 3-2 but fell 3-1 to St. Clair Green who had beaten West Virginia earlier in the day.

Now in the lower bracket, Concord got to work, taking out West Virginia 3-0 and setting up a rematch against St. Clair in the best-of-seven final. The play was intense, but Concord came out on top 4-3, handing St. Clair its first loss of the day and setting up a final match for double elimination. With the Collegiate Rocket League Open 2 title on the line, this match also went to seven with Concord once again winning 4-3.

Collegiate Rocket League Standings

Picking up 16 league points with the victory, Concord University jumped three places in the standings to first with a total of 22 points. Maryville, the previous leader, only earned one point this week, giving them 17 total. This was still enough to hold on to the second-place spot in the standings.

Reigning champs Northwood slipped a spot from second to third. They came into the week with 12 points and added four more, giving them a total of 16. St. Clair College’s Green team was the big mover in the standings, earning 12 points and going up 5 places this week. After two weeks the team has a total of 13 points, tying them with West Virginia for fourth place in the standings. The third Collegiate Rocket League open tournament will be held October 19 and 20
