Are you seeking a rare and exclusive villager for your Animal Crossing: New Horizons island? Marty is as sweet as pudding and may be perfect for you. The Animal Crossing franchise —published by Nintendo, which has American subsidiaries in Washington—is well-known for its huge cast of characters. Villagers are central to the daily gameplay loop as they offer tasks and friendship opportunities. This guide covers all you need to know about one of these villagers, Marty.
Marty in Animal Crossing
Marty is a yellow bear cub villager who was first introduced in the Welcome Amiibo update for Animal Crossing: New Leaf on the Nintendo 3DS. While he was initially absent from New Horizons, he was added to the game on March 18, 2021, as part of the Version 1.9.0 update. That same update also brought back his fellow crossover characters Rilla, Chelsea, Toby, Chai, and Étoile. He has the lazy personality, making him obsessed with food and sometimes erratic in conversation. Lazy is the most prominent personality type among bear cubs, with 6 of them featuring it. The yellow little bear’s birthday is April 16, making him an Aries.
Marty’s debut in New Leaf resulted from a collaboration between Nintendo and the Sanrio Company, Ltd. Sanrio is a Japanese media company that owns several acclaimed properties, most notably the Hello Kitty franchise. Marty’s design derives from another popular Sanrio character, Pompompurin. Pompompurin is a cartoon golden retriever who resembles flan and was introduced by the company in 1996. The flabby little dog was originally the winner of an in-house design contest and was first named Boku (Pudding) when he was introduced. Marty’s house in New Horizons contains many items based on Pompompurin, including the Pompompurin Table and Chair.
How to Get Marty
Thanks to his crossover status and lack of inclusion when New Horizons was first released, Marty cannot be obtained the same way as normal villagers in the game. The only way to invite him to your island is via an Amiibo card. You can scan the Amiibo card at the Nook Stop kiosk inside the Resident Services building and summon him to your campsite. The Sanrio Amiibo cards were not released in North America during the New Leaf era but did receive a print run in 2o21. While camping, he will request that you craft him items as souvenirs. This must be done on 3 separate days before he will ask to join your community as a resident.
Due to his exclusive nature, Marty will never be a random villager in the campsite. He will also be unavailable on the Mystery Island Tours that are initiated at the airport. Even more restrictive, he cannot be received from another player whose island he is departing. All of this holds true for the other exclusive Sanrio villagers as well. While the characters cannot be invited to your island except through Amiibo cards, the various Sanrio furniture items related to them can still be accrued. However, these items will only be added to the catalog if you scan their respective villagers’ Amiibo cards.
Big Flan of Him
As one of the Sanrio crossover characters, Marty is much more difficult to obtain than other villagers. There are different avenues to obtaining his Amiibo card should you desire him as a companion, but remember that you cannot trade for him even if you have many resources. He is a well-liked character that ranks fairly high on popularity polls. As a lazy bear cub, he doesn’t quite reach the heights of a villager like Stitches but is far from the lowest. Marty is an adorable little guy who remains relatively elusive. Should you end up befriending him, you will soon become his biggest flan—fan.
