How to Dive in Animal Crossing 2024

The ability to dive is one of numerous gameplay mechanics available to players in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. The Animal Crossing series, published by Nintendo, which has American subsidiaries in Washington, contains various gameplay mechanics. Diving was introduced alongside swimming in New Leaf for the Nintendo 3DS. Diving allows you to explore the waters surrounding your island and capture valuable underwater sea creatures. This guide will explain how you can purchase a wetsuit and start diving.

As mentioned, swimming and diving were not initially featured in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. The 1.3.0 Free Summer Update reintroduced these two intertwined mechanics to the series. This update also included the return of Pascal and the introduction of Gullivarrr, the pirate alter ego of fan-favorite NPC Gulliver. These two NPCs both play pivotal roles when it comes to diving. If you have started a new save file, both swimming and diving should already be unlocked. One thing to note is that you can only swim in the ocean surrounding your island; the river is not eligible for swimming or diving.

To dive, you must first get your hands on a wet suit. The Nooklings sell wet suits at their shop; the suits are located inside the tool cabinet. There are many different kinds of suits spanning a range of colors, with the in-store stock changing daily. Purchasing a wet suit sets you back a measly 3,000 Bells. Another option for acquiring a wet suit is through the Nook Stop terminal in Resident Services or via the Nook App on your phone. As with Nook’s Cranny, the types of wet suits available via the app rotate daily. A special Nook Inc. branded wet suit can also be ordered from the Nook Stop kiosk/app in exchange for 800 Nook Miles.

How to Dive

Regardless of how you obtain one, once you have a wet suit, it’s time to start diving. The wet suit behaves similarly to a piece of clothing: You need to open your inventory and choose the “Wear” option when selecting it. You will be unable to do this if you are currently using a wand outfit, meaning you need to revert to your normal attire before you can go swimming. Wet suits cannot be used when creating wand outfits nor can they be equipped from the wardrobe menu. Although they appear like clothes, wet suits function more like tools. Additional swimming items like scuba masks can also be worn, but these are not necessary to swim or dive.

You can begin plundering the ocean once you have your wet suit. Approach the sea from your beach and press the A button as you move towards the water. If successful, your character will slowly enter. You can’t access the water if you are wielding any tools, so unequip them before swimming. Another way you can enter the ocean is through dive bombing. A dive bomb is performed from either beach rocks or the pier where Kapp’n is located. To do so you need to get a running start and hit the A button at an edge, which causes you to front-flip into the water. While swimming, pressing A allows you to travel faster; the Y button lets you dive.

Pearls of Wisdom

Being able to dive is more than a leisurely pastime; it offers bounteous rewards. As you wade around the waters surrounding your island, you will encounter small shadows moving about. These shadows belong to deep sea creatures that you can capture. The encyclopedia has a dedicated section to these underwater creatures, with over 40 in total to encounter across different seasons. While you can sell them, sometimes for great profit, they can also be donated to the Museum. Some of these critters, like the giant isopod and gigas giant clam, scurry rapidly and are difficult to snag. The best method to catch them is to slowly creep up on their shadows and quickly dive once you are above them.

When hunting deepsea creatures, you may come across the scallop. Obtaining a scallop will summon the red sea otter Pascal. Once a day, when first catching a scallop, Pascal politely requests that you exchange it with him. In return, he will provide you with either a Mermaid set DIY (if you do not have all of them already), a Mermaid-themed piece of clothing, or a pearl. The Mermaid set contains 14 different items and their recipes are received exclusively from Pascal. Pearls found while diving via small shadows—or, as mentioned, from Pascal—must be acquired to craft the Mermaid furniture pieces.

Dive In

Diving brought a host of new content and activities to New Horizons. Beyond the return of Pascal, players also were met with the debuting Gullivarrr. Similar to the normal Gulliver’s fetch quest revolving around missing tech parts, Gullivarrr has lost possession of his communicator. Hunting for the communicator requires diving into the sea and retrieving it; bringing it back to the salty seagull rewards you with some exclusive pirate-themed booty. Whether you need to make some extra cash, fill out your Museum, or are looking to get some sea-worthy furniture, your island’s sea offers many treasures. There’s great depth to diving but the ocean can be tamed through grit and experience.
