There has been much discourse surrounding Ubisoft and the rollout of Assassin’s Creed Shadows. There has been much critique not only about the game itself but also about Ubisoft as a company. As the developer/publisher tries to salvage this iconic franchise, they’ve made mistakes with their fans; recent news indicates that. Recently, the collector’s edition has dropped in price. Here’s everything we know so far.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows Delay
Assassin’s Creed Shadows is the 14th installment of the main Assassin’s Creed series and the second title featuring dual protagonists. Fans highly anticipated the game due to its setting, Feudal Japan, and Ubisoft’s promise to return to the original intention of the Assassin’s Creed franchise. Despite the hype surrounding the installment, Ubisoft announced its delay only a few weeks ago.
Despite placing preorders and the game being slated to release this November, it was pushed back to February 14th, 2025. They also announced that Assassin’s Creed Shadows would be available on Steam upon release, signifying the end of Ubisoft’s exclusivity contract with the Epic Games store. They said they planned to close preorders and refund those who had. They also noted that all new preorders would get the first expansion pack for free.
Ubisoft cited the desire to produce quality content for fans as the reason they delayed Assassin’s Creed Shadows, stating, “We realize we need more time to polish and refine the experience, pushing further some of our key features.” Many fans would agree that they’d rather wait longer for the game than get a subpar one, similar to the disappointment of Assassin’s Creed: Mirage. Still, Ubisoft received a lot of criticism for having opening preorders in the first place if the game was still being prepared to be finished.
Price Drops
Recently, it’s been announced that the collector’s edition of Assassin’s Creed Shadows has dropped in price. The original cost of the edition was $279, which has received a lot of backlash from fans of the franchise. Recently, the collector’s edition dropped $50, now costing $229; it’s also missing many initially promised bonuses. They have also removed the “early access” option, which would have given those willing to pay more the ability to play the game a few days earlier.
Early access describes a game that’s not finished but is released by developers regardless. Consumers are notified that the game isn’t fully ready and may experience some bugs but that devs are actively working on it. Additionally, early access games tend to be at a lower price than when fully released to the public. For Ubisoft, their early access simply means that people would get to play Assassin’s Creed Shadows fast, only by a few days, which fans have called “anti-consumer.”
The collector’s edition will include items like a statue of Yasuke and Naoe, the protagonists, a world map, a wall scroll, and many other items that collectors might find enticing. Despite the price drop, Ubisoft hasn’t clarified what people who have already paid the $279 will receive now that early access and the season pass have been removed.
Final Thoughts
It seems that Ubisoft continuously makes the wrong choices regarding the Creed franchise, from making money-hungry, anti-consumer choices to delaying the game after opening preorders. The biggest sin Ubisoft has committed, however, is not listening to fans regarding the future of the Creed franchise. While some loyal supporters are waiting to see what the developer might do next, others wonder if Assassin’s Creed Shadows could save the franchise or if it’s time to end it with dignity.
