All About the Goofy Puck in Animal Crossing 2024

Does your island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons need someone who can play goalie? Puck the penguin is certainly no hoser. The Animal Crossing franchise —published by Nintendo, which has American subsidiaries in Washington—is highly regarded for its large cast of quirky characters. Villagers are central to the series’ gameplay loop as they offer daily tasks and friendship. This guide covers what you need to know about one of these villagers, Puck.

Puck in Animal Crossing

Puck is a light pink penguin who was introduced in the first Animal Crossing title, the Nintendo 64’s Doubutsu no Mori. He has appeared in almost every title in the series, having a brief absence from Wild World before returning in City Folk. His omission from the DS game may have been an attempt to cut back on overlapping personalities between the different species. After all, Puck has the lazy personality, which is shared by 4 other members of his species, making it the most prominent personality type for penguins. His signature phrase “brrrrrrrrr” gives a chilly impression, a catchphrase trait shared by many of his other penguin compatriots. Puck’s birthday is on February 21, making him a Pisces.

Thematically, Puck’s design revolves around hockey. He wears a helmet styled after the ones worn by hockey players, making him rather unique in terms of villager designs. In New Horizons, his initial outfit is a white and red ice hockey uniform. His favorite saying, “A bad attitude will land you in the penalty box” also amplifies this sports-centered concept. Despite all of these connections to hockey, it is a bit strange that he has the lazy personality type rather than being a jock. The helmet-clad penguin even has the fitness hobby, meaning you can often find him working out with dumbbells and exercising. He is quite active for a lazy bird, but how can you acquire him?

How to Get Puck

Finding the hockey aficionado could be a shot in the dark. The campsite offers one method of seeing him; occasionally random villagers will stay at your campsite and play minigames with you. During their stay, they may also request to join your island. Due to the large number of villagers in the game, the odds of this being Puck are low. Using an Amiibo card at the Nook Stop kiosk is another course of action. This allows you to invite him to the campsite directly, wherein he will request that you craft items for him as souvenirs for his stay. Note that you must do this on 3 separate days, so it will take time before he joins your island.

Another way to find Puck is through a Mystery Island Tour. These Tours can be initiated at the airport and require using Nook Miles Tickets. Villagers found on Mystery Island Tours are random, meaning the odds of finding him aren’t in your favor. Your entire cache of Tickets could be on ice before you ever discover him. Thankfully, New Horizons’s online capabilities afford another avenue as you can swipe a moving villager off another player’s hands. Villagers in the game occasionally express a desire to move, resulting in them packing all their belongings in boxes. When they are in boxes, another player can speak with them and convince them to move to their island.

Shoot Your Shot

Puck is a real team player who is nice as ice. However, not everyone is quite so hot on him, for varying reasons. Some people are not big fans of his design, especially the helmet. In New Horizons, it is possible to change his helmet to different headgear, something that could not be done in previous games. Others dislike the lazy personality archetype as a whole. This can be understandable, as sometimes a conversation with a lazy villager can veer into unusual territories. The hockey-obsessed penguin generally ranks around the mid-tier as far as popularity rankings go, making it easy to add him to your roster. Don’t pass on this penguin; he has more flow than ice!
