New Glitch Uncovered in Final Fantasy 7

A glitch allowing Cloud to walk on the ocean in Final Fantasy 7

The one thing that never changes about video games is that they are software. Software is code, and code is written by humans. As such, mistakes can be made and unintentional consequences can be derived. In common parlance, we call this a glitch. Final Fantasy 7 is no stranger to glitches, with many well-known bugs being found in its lifetime. To speedrun the game further, avid gamers have experimented and discovered brand-new glitches. The latest one not only shaves hours off of gameplay but also has unintended consequences. With some spoilers for the story of this legendary game, let’s talk about this glitch and what it has led to.

Walking On Water

As described by @Luzbel789 on X, speedrunners have uncovered a new way to skip major portions of Final Fantasy 7‘s early game. Two speedrunners by the names of AceZephyr and Kuma are credited as finding this glitch. While the technical details are complex, it involves riding Chocobos in a pattern to store data about the terrain the characters can cross. This leads to a bug wherein a dismounted Cloud can walk across ocean terrain and clip through mountains. Thus, the entire story of the first disc is skipped as players head straight to the Forgotten City, the end location of disc one. It is here where things get very interesting for the story implications of the game.

She Lives!

As most gamers know by now, the party member Aerith dies at this point. Before you reach this location in the vanilla game, she is removed from your party. This glitch thus leads to an interesting scenario. Aerith can be kept in your party, meaning she will be present in a way she normally couldn’t. After the scene where she dies, another version remains as a party member for the rest of the game. Thus, the long-desired prophecy of keeping Aerith alive has been fulfilled. Since the 90s, gamers have desperately wanted a way to save the beloved character. While her presence can cause glitches, she can be utilized in many combat encounters to the player’s delight.

Final Thoughts

Saving Aerith is something gamers find enticing. The moment is so legendary that approaching it in new ways is exciting and controversial. As Eurogamer points out, it caused quite a stir when the moment was revisited and altered in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Nevertheless, gamers still hope for a way to rescue her. The story of loss that accompanies her may be great and influential, but sometimes you just can’t tell gamers no. With this new glitch, we have the first method to keep Aerith in an unmodded version of the PS1 game. While this is beyond what the developers intended, it remains a testament to the willpower of gamers that new workarounds are still being found.
