Prominent Fallout Mod Cancelled in 2024

Bethesda games are quite well-known for their modding scenes. Players develop their own weapons, armor, content, or complete overhauls. Many mods are as anticipated as full-game releases. The Fallout franchise is no exception to this, with many playing their games modded far more than vanilla.

An anticipated mod for Fallout 4 was just canceled, however. This Fallout mod would’ve recreated the first installment in the franchise with Bethesda’s more modern engine for the series. With its loss, gamers cry out for a proper recreation of these older titles. Unfortunately, that call remains unanswered.

Fallout Vault 13 was to be a total recreation of the first Fallout. Released in 1997 for Windows and Mac, that first installment paved the way for the franchise to grow into the juggernaut it is today. The game’s isometric and turn-based style is very different from the first-person shooters that Bethesda has since made the franchise into.

Many have wondered if they could bring that game’s setting and story to modern platforms. While Bethesda shows no outward interest, modders have attempted it. This Fallout mod would’ve seen the Fallout 4 engine used as a base, being the most recent single-player title in the series. Many were excited to see the modern gameplay alongside the classic story.

A Sad Finale

After releasing a public demo earlier this year, the team has called it quits. While they don’t plan to return to the project, citing burnout and the stress of a small team, they want to share behind-the-scenes info in the future. Many mods struggle with the nature of fan projects, being labors of passion that can consume as much time as a job. The nature of the work, however, means that getting compensated is difficult and possibly litigious.

While not the first such title to be canceled, it stands as one that fans greatly looked forward to. This is a loss for the community, but they will soldier on as they wait for news of more Fallout. Other mods in the works will hopefully take us to new locations or provide other exciting features.

Final Thoughts

Fans of the franchise are always excited for the next big Fallout mod. Teaser trailers showcase epic new gameplay and settings that excite. Recreations of other games in the franchise like Fallout New Vegas continue to showcase updates with no release in sight. Fans ask Bethesda for remasters or remakes of the old titles, but have heard nothing.

With silence from a seemingly too-busy Bethesda, it is only natural that fans take it upon themselves. Other games like Fallout 2 and 3 have their own recreations either in development or long cancelled. While we wait to see if more modders will take up the torch of creating a true Fallout mod version of the old games, we are certainly a long way away from a release of one.
