The Assassin’s Creed franchise is vast. While most of the story is moving towards the same goal, each of the protagonists is different and has alternative approaches to their end goal. Creed also uses the term “protagonist” to its fullest extent by not making all of the main characters heroes in the traditional sense. There are a few games in which we follow the perspective of the Templars, the enemies of the Assassin’s Brotherhood. Let’s talk about all the protagonists of the Assassin’s Creed franchise so far.
Assassin’s Creed 2007-2015
The first Creed game was released in 2007. The main protagonist is Altaïr Ibn-La’Ahad, who was born into the Brotherhood, which we will see commonly throughout the series. Altaïr has a more abrasive personality, especially at the beginning of the game. He isn’t afraid to bend the Creed rules to his advantage. Assassin’s Creed II follows Ezio Auditore da Firenze, the lead of what would become The Ezio Trilogy. The other two games in the trilogy are Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood and Assassin’s Creed: Revelations; Ezio is the protagonist for those as well.
Assassin’s Creed III begins what is known as the Kenway Saga, following different members of the Kenway family. In this game, released in 2012, we follow Haytham Kenway. This is the first time we will be following a Templar, which is an interesting change so early in the franchise. Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag follows Haytham’s father, Edward Kenway. Edward starts as a pirate who helps the Templars and the Brotherhood until he eventually pledges his loyalty to them. Haytham didn’t know that his father was an Assassin at first and thought he was a Templar, so he joined them instead of the Brotherhood.
Assassin’s Creed: Rogue has us playing as Shay Cormac. We follow his journey while he begins as a servant to the Brotherhood, who then turns to the Templars. Rogue concluded the Kenway saga, but we hear about Haytham later in the franchise. The Initiate Duology begins with Assassin’s Creed: Unity, where we follow Arno Dorian, whose father, an Assassin, was killed by Shay, leaving him to be raised in the Templar. Once he learned about his Brotherhood heritage, he left the Templars and became an Assassin. Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate is the first game we play as dual protagonists, Jacob and Evie Frye. They’re twins trying to remove Templar reign from London and find the Pieces of Eden.
2017 To Present Creed Games
The Layla Saga begins in Assassin’s Creed: Origins. We follow Bayek and the story of how the Assassin’s Brotherhood came to be. Kassandra is the protagonist of Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey and helped find the Hidden Ones, later referred to as the Assassin’s Brotherhood. Even though players can choose Alexios, the male protagonist option, Kassandra is the canon choice.
Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla had us playing as Eivor Varinsdottir, a Viking who crossed paths with Hidden Ones. He is the reincarnation of Odin and indirectly participated in the creation of the Templars. Assassin’s Creed: Mirage concludes the Layla Saga and has us follow Basim, a street thief turned Assassin we first encounter in Valhalla.
The upcoming game in the Creed franchise is Assassin’s Creed: Shadows. The protagonists will be Yasuke and Fujibayashi Naoe, the second dual protagonists in the franchise. After being delayed, Shadows is set to be released on February 14th, 2025. Many fans are excited to continue the franchise and see what Shadows has in store.

Ubisoft has crafted an incredible story despite specific criticisms from fans. As they continue the legacy of the Creed franchise, long-time players wonder what’s next. A rumored project code-named “Jade” is said to be a mobile game, and fans refer to another as “Assassin’s Creed: Codename Hexe.” As we wait for more to be revealed, we can always look back on the amazing stories and indulge in the lore of the Creed.
