It’s no secret that games can be educational, but the first-ever Scottish Esports in Education Mini-Conference (SEEMC2024) is set to show how esports can be used in the classroom. The event promises to bring together educators, industry professionals, and policymakers to look at how competitive video gaming is reshaping academics across the country.
Industry and Education Unite
Organized by Scottish Esports in partnership with the University of the West of Scotland, the event will take place on the university’s Paisley Campus. According to the organizers, SEEMC2024 represents a deliberate effort to bridge the gap between traditional education and the rapidly growing esports industry.
The inaugural conference will start with the basics, featuring the theme “What is Esports?” It is intended to be the first of a series of annual events designed to foster collaboration, share best practices, and build a strong network of esports and games educators across Scotland.
Mapping the Future
Organizers hope SEEMC2024 will allow attendees to learn from respected figures in the educational sector, including representatives from Education Scotland’s Digital Team. Experts from leading academic institutions are collaborating with Brian Baglow. He’s a respected voice in Scotland’s gaming industry and head of the Scottish Games Network.
The program schedule includes panels that will give attendees an inside look at how esports are making their way into the education system. There will be a special emphasis on the Scottish Qualification Authority’s NPA Esports qualification and the upcoming HNC qualification, both of which are signs of a growing recognition of esports as a legitimate academic discipline and a potential career path for Scotland’s students.
SEEMC2024’s focus will be on case studies that demonstrate how esports have been successfully rolled into various levels of education, from primary schools to all the way higher education. Organizers want to give educators practical strategies that will allow them to use esports in their classrooms and beyond. The idea is to show how these programs improve student engagement, skill development, and career readiness.
Practical Insights and Resources
Scottish Esports is looking at SEEMC2024 as a unique opportunity to listen directly to front-line educators and gather feedback on the current esports certification being used across Scotland. The information and insights they receive will be used to develop targeted resources and improve support mechanisms for educators interested in using esports in their classrooms. Organizers also plan to use the teachers’ feedback to shape future esports education initiatives, ensuring that the educational system adapts to the needs and potential of today’s students.
