X owner Elon Musk is known for sending shockwaves through various industries. Typically, he generates news by making bold statements and moves. Notably, Musk’s mention of Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) and its parent company, Hasbro, understandably garnered fan interest. Enhanced by his status as a billionaire entrepreneur, Musk’s words carry a lot of weight, potentially influencing people to support his vision.

Dungeons & Dragons History Book

The game publisher, Wizards of the Coast LLC, is known for their fantasy and science fiction-themed games. Initially, the publisher was an independent entity before its acquisition by Hasbro in 1999, where it currently operates as a subsidiary. As a restructuring move, Hasbro made Wizard of the Coast at the helm of its new division, Wizards & Digital, in February 2021. Wizards of the Coast released its book, The Making of Original D&D: 1970-1977, at D&D’s 50th Anniversary celebration. Offering insightful knowledge of the game’s origins, their book features carefully reproduced original design letters and documents, alongside an early version of the game.

Highlighting its evolution, these historical artifacts contain handwritten notes and typewritten pages discussing the game’s beloved experience enjoyed by D&D fans everywhere. Conversely, its opening section acknowledges that modern audiences may find some content unobjectionable. Upon its release, intense debates arose on social media around its appearance and message. While some fans appreciated the book’s transparency, others believed the introduction disrespected the proclaimed driving creative force behind D&D, Gary Gygax.

As an American Black Friday deal, more audiences purchased the book, reigniting social media discussions. However, Musk’s strong opinion on the subject captured overwhelming attention. As part of the book’s critics, he vehemently defended Gygax, and D&D’s creators criticized Wizards of the Coast and Habro for poorly handling the game’s legacy. Nevertheless, Musk’s blunt statement left a lasting impression on the social media discussion.

In the latest edition of D&D, its creators purposely distance it from Gyrax’s opinions and design choices. Notably, the 2014 Players Handbook introduced significant changes in the game. For instance, the term “races” was replaced with “species,” and character statistics were linked to backgrounds instead of species. According to Wizards of the Coast, fans resonated with this revised approach, as their book is the fastest-selling D&D book in the game’s history.

Over the past week, the debate surrounding Gary Gygax’s legacy simmered with opinions remaining divided. While some may revere his allure in D&D, others aim to dismiss it altogether. Regardless of position, most D&D fans view Gary Gygax as a complex individual whose impact is open to individual interpretation. However, Musk would again make headlines on November 27th, responding to a post, alluding to potential plans to disrupt Hasbro.

Hasbro’s Financial Situation and Challenges

Hasbro’s financial situation is noteworthy; its revenue was $4.32 billion last year, offset by $3.99 billion in reported debt. Furthermore, the company’s stock price fluctuates between $45.87 and $73.46. Given these numbers, Hasbro may be a potentially affordable purchase for Elon Musk, especially in comparison to his acquisition of X, formerly Twitter, which cost $44 billion. In recent years, the sluggish toy and collectible market has created numerous challenges for Hasbro. However, they found help in Wizards of the Coast, driven by D&D’s resurgence and the popular strategy game, Magic: The Gathering, to persevere. Ultimately, while seemingly intentional, many question Musk’s motivations and priorities, especially regarding his potential interest in Hasbro.

Final Thoughts

It’s uncertain what Musk is going to do as he’s already preoccupied with his other various companies, including X, SpaceX, Tesla, and Neuralink. Additionally, he aided President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team, resulting in his recruitment to oversee the Department of Government Efficiency. Although Musk has numerous commitments, his unpredictability makes ruling out his potential move into the tabletop industry challenging. Whether good or bad, if there’s one thing certain about Elon Musk, it is that disruption follows him wherever he goes.
