Attention, lovers of all things dark fantasy. An upcoming game by Rebel Wolves called The Blood of Dawnwalker is already getting RPG enthusiasts excited. The first teaser trailer was released for the game on January 13. Although it is mainly a cinematic trailer with a brief snippet of gameplay, it shows off a powerful story that future players will be able to dive into. With that in mind, what might this upcoming AAA title have in store?
The Dark Fantasy Story So Far
Thanks to the trailer and the official website for the game, the foundation of The Blood of Dawnwalker‘s story has been revealed. The game is set in 14th-century Europe, a time when bloody battles and the Black Plague wrought destruction and death upon the general masses. It is during this time of weakness that a group of vampires and other monstrous creatures decide to emerge from the darkness. These vampires seek both power and freedom under the guise of liberating a decimated village, as seen in the teaser trailer.
In The Blood of Dawnwalker, players will take on the role of Coen, a man from said afflicted village. As the trailer shows, his young sister is dying from the Black Plague. He tries to run away with her, but a group of guards is adamant about ending the young girl’s life. However, they don’t get the chance due to a group of vampires violently ending theirs. If the game’s story is linear, Coen is then turned into a Dawnwalk after this event unfolds. He becomes a creature that walks the line between light and darkness. As the official website suggests, players will be able to choose how far into vampirism Coen gets to go.
What the Gameplay Will Be Like
Along with choices that will shape Coen’s destiny, players can expect tons of action in this upcoming open-world RPG. Even though we only saw a small snippet of said action in the trailer, descriptions of the game itself provide hints. According to the site, players will be able to face foes “be they human, monster, or the ticking clock itself.” Players can expect to encounter gnarly beasts and the darkness of humanity itself. Evidence of this can be found in the brief bit of gameplay footage found within the trailer.
Since Rebel Wolves, the dev team bringing us this title, is comprised of people who worked on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, there is a chance that combat may feel familiar. However, there has been no real reveal of mechanics or an in-depth look at Coen’s abilities. The combat style of The Blood of Dawnwalker remains up in the air at this point. The same goes for the entire story, but most of what we know about the same so far involves the narrative.
When to Expect More News
For those wanting to know even more about The Blood of Dawnwalker, myself included, there is some bad news. We won’t get to know much more until summer comes around. That means a minimum of five months will have to pass before we get that promised full gameplay reveal. That also means that we might not get to experience the game until late into the year or even 2026. Whatever the case may be, there is one thing that is certain. Even though we’ve only gotten a cinematic teaser trailer and a brief look at gameplay, excitement is already brewing.
As a person who is into horror and dark fantasy, this is an upcoming game that I am extremely excited about. That is why I view it as a good thing that we won’t be seeing much more about it until a later date. This year is already packed with games that I and many others are going to sink countless hours into, including Avowed, Monster Hunter Wilds, and Fable.
