When Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 came out in 2015, it revolutionized the franchise by adding Zombies Chronicles. This expansion remastered eight beloved maps and gave them to players with upgraded graphics, gobblegums, refined mechanics, and so much more. Maps that were years old at that point were restored, either giving new players a chance to experience them for the first time or veteran players the chance to play a smoother version of their favorites.
With Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 doing a good job of rekindling interest in the zombies mode, there’s renewed interest in another release of Zombies Chronicles. There have been three Black Ops games since the last one and a few other zombies games thrown in there. There are plenty of maps to choose from if Treyarch and Activision decide once again to go down that road. Will they ever do that, though?
Zombies Chronicles 2 May Be a Pipe Dream
Unfortunately, we may have reached the point of no return with CoD Zombies. Black Ops 6 does a lot of things right with the new gameplay, including the ability to buy more perks, ammo refills, and more. Sadly, there’s just too much that’s different, for better or worse, for them to put old maps on new games. The Black Ops 3 engine was different than the Black Ops 2 and prior games’ engine, but it was similar enough. Can you imagine playing Kino Der Toten with armor plates, improved health, and other major changes added in Black Ops 6?
The game has evolved so much that another release of Zombies Chronicles may well be a pipe dream. Sure, Call of Duty could bring them back and keep the engines or mechanics from their original games. It’s not impossible to have different gameplay styles in one game, especially with how easy it is to code nowadays.
But is the franchise going to do that? Probably not. It would be a whole lot more difficult to either remake the maps in BO6 style or to run two engines on one game, so why would they put in extra effort to bring back old maps? Treyarch and Activision have a working formula with the current game, so it’s a long shot to think they’d go above and beyond to bring back classic maps.
If Old Maps Return, Which Ones Could Be Chosen?
For the sake of argument, let’s say Black Ops 6 or even Black Ops 7 does decide to do Zombies Chronicles 2. There are so many good choices for maps that could be remastered. The ones from Zombies Chronicles won’t be remastered again, although it’s possible that several original Black Ops 3 maps would be up for a remaster. Some of them are really good maps and deserve to be played again today.
Some potential options include:
- Shadows of Evil (Black Ops 3)
- Blood of the Dead (Black Ops 4)
- Buried (Black Ops 2)
- Revelations (Black Ops 3)
- Ancient Evil (Black Ops 4)
- IX (Black Ops 4)
- Firebase Z (Black Ops Cold War)
- “Five” (Black Ops)
- Der Eisandrache (Black Ops 3)
- Tranzit (Black Ops 2)
- Call of the Dead (Black Ops)
- Alpha Omega (Black Ops 4)
- Die Rise (Black Ops 2)
Put simply, there are a ton of great zombies maps begging to be brought back to the forefront. Last time, Treyarch chose eight: Verruckt, Moon, Origins, Shi No Numa, Shangri-La, Ascension, Kino Der Toten, and Nacht Der Untoten. If, and this is a huge if, Treyarch does decide to release a second chronicles, they’ll have their hands full choosing the right ones.
