Tomo Endless Blue

Tomo: Endless Blue – A Massive New MMO That Combines Minecraft And Pokemon

Tomo: Endless Blue is a new MMORPG set to be released in 2026 by the new development company Onibi Studios. The studio is founded by game industry veterans, many of whom worked on some of the most popular MMOs, RPGs, and online games of all time. With such a decorated staff, it should be no surprise that the first game from the studio would take on a massive undertaking. Tomo appears to bring a lot to the table and could quickly become one of the great modern MMORPGs of the era.

In and of itself, the concept of Tomo: Endless Blue is not necessarily a new one. However, putting all the elements together is what creates an entirely new experience. The game is drawing comparisons to Pokémon and Minecraft, two of the most wildly popular and successful gaming experiences of all time. Onibi Studios has staff with resumes in working on games, including World of Warcraft, Baldur’s Gate 3, Fortnite, and League of Legends. It makes sense that they would shoot for a lofty goal.

Tomo is an anime-inspired game, taking place in an open-world MMO action-RPG. According to the announcement by Onibi studios, as written by GameSpot,  “Tomo: Endless Blue is an anime-inspired, open-world action-RPG in which players will get the chance to tame mysterious creatures named Tomo, craft various contraptions, and explore a procedurally generated oceanic world known as Endless Blue.” The studio also confirmed it to be a cross of multiple genres, taking elements from action, open-world, RPG, MMO, and adventure.

Thankfully, the studio treated fans to a first look trailer of the game. The 3-minute clip felt a lot more like a story than a gameplay trailer, but players certainly got the essence. The trailer started off sweet, and the “Pokémon-style” monster-catching mechanics were obvious. The crafting element and”Minecraft-style” building are also highlighted. The end of the trailer, however, was gruesome and seemed geared away from the younger audiences that may typically enjoy the other two inspirations.

What Makes The Game Unique?

The development team wants to be quick to explain what sets Tomo apart from the others in the industry. According to the game’s Steam page, “When worlds end, fragments of their civilizations become islands adrift in the Endless Blue—a boundless ocean realm inhabited by mysterious creatures known as the Tomo. No one knows why the Endless Blue exists or why it gathers the remnants of fallen worlds. But at its heart lies the secrets of the Vagari, an ancient civilization long vanished, yet whose influence still lingers beneath the waves. Their truth is waiting to be uncovered. Will you be the one to unravel the secrets they left behind?”

A press release from the studio gives a little more insight. “The trailer peeks into just one story of many in the Endless Blue, giving us a slice of life in this infinite world where one may uncover unexpected secrets lying in darkness.” Moreover, additional elements of the game are further explained on the page:

  • Tomo – Meet these extraordinary companions, each with unique powers to help you in epic battles. Join forces with your Tomo team and use the environment strategically to outsmart your foes! When you’re not on grand adventures, enjoy a cozy life with your Tomo. They can help you build, farm, craft, and even cook, creating unforgettable moments together.

  • Procedurally-generated worlds and civilizations – The game blends handcrafted content and bespoke procedural generation to create vibrant, bustling worlds that feel truly alive. Villages, their architecture, culture, stories, quests, dialogues, and people are all dynamically generated, ensuring no two islands are the same.

  • Voxel physics – Blocks have physics and can be used to create vehicles and contraptions. Whether it’s a boat, crane, or airship, build your own machines block by block—with your creativity, the possibilities are endless.

  • Quests – The world is filled with challenges waiting for you to conquer: defeat a local Champion in an Arena, seek out a mythical Tomo, brave a dangerous cave, or uncover hidden secrets in ancient ruins.

  • Build and craft – Whether you’re setting up camp on a long journey or laying the first blocks of your dream home, build a cozy life together with your friends and Tomo.

  • Multiplayer – Play by yourself offline, with friends on a local network, or distant server. There’s no limit on the number of players—it’s as many as your device or server can take!

  • Moddable – We’ve kept it all open, so go ahead and break the game. If your dream is to replace all Tomo creatures with handsome pigeons playing illegal poker hands, then so be it. The world is your oyster!

These descriptions give a pretty decent idea of what the game is to be, and it has a lot of potential. The physics, gameplay, and mechanics of the game are highlighted, and the dark undertones are also referenced. If the studio can pull it off, the game may manage to meld joy and nostalgia into an entirely new genre of MMORPGs all its own.

Final Thoughts

Tomo: Endless Blue takes on a massive goal by trying elements of three incredibly popular games and genres in Pokémon, Minecraft, and MMO. Taking the three elements together, plus adding an open-world mechanic and dark storyline, seems like a recipe for a fantastic game, one that should captivate many audiences. The biggest fear is that it is too many different elements and the studio may be taking on too much. Given the experience of the staff, though, they should pull it off exceptionally. The game is expected to be released sometime in 2026.
