TL;DW – LTA North Edition: LYON Blinded by Greed in Game 1 Against TL

Week 4, Day 1, 1st week of the LTA North best of 3 matches, TL vs LYON. TL’s score is 0-0, while LYON is 0-0. TL is playing on blue side, LYON on red. The team roster for TL is Impact (top), UmTi (jungle), APA (mid), Yeon (carry), and CoreJJ (support). For LYON, the team is Licorice (top), Oddielan (jungle), Saint (mid), Hena (carry), and Lyonz (support). For specifics regarding early, mid, and late game, see the Terms at the bottom of the page.

Champion Selection: Range vs Power

  • Initial bans are focused on top, jungle, and mid with Yone, Naafiri, Gwen, Rumble, Vi, and Sion taken off the board.
  • TL gets first pick and they choose Varus. LYON opt to go for Zeri and Nocturne first. TL then take Skarner and Azir. LYON finishes off the first set of champion picks with Rakan.
  • During second ban phase, LYON focuses their bans on support, removing Poppy and Renata, while TL take out Sylas and Jayce.
  • LYON starts out the second champion selection phase by picking Xerath. TL complete their team by picking Alistar and Renekton. LYON ends by taking Aatrox. TL’s team is more well-rounded and team fight oriented, while LYON has opted for a diving pick comp with range advantage.
  • Team comps are: TL – Renekton (top), Skarner (jungle), Azir (mid), Varus (carry), Alistar (support) vs LYON – Aatrox (top), Nocturne (jungle), Xerath (mid), Zeri (carry), Rakan (support)

Early Game Highlights: Early Advantages for LYON

  • Early game is mostly farming with lanes going as expected. Licorice and Impact get into a fight top. Both get low. As Licorice backs off, UmTi comes into lane to try and gank him under turret. They don’t get the kill but they do get Licorice’s Flash.
  • Impact and UmTi start backing. Licorice sees UmTi backing with a ward and decides to stay in lane. Impact cancels his back and tries to kill Licorice but Licorice turns it around and kills him instead for First Blood.
  • Lyonz gets chunked down for trying to poke but, seeing as he is Rakan, he gets away without too much issue. Early game ends with Saint hitting level 6. LYON has the gold lead (400) and the farm lead.

Mid Game Highlights: The Scales are Starting to Tip in TL’s Favor

  • Oddielan starts up the First Drake (Cloud). UmTi, meanwhile, goes after the first set of Voidgrubs. Oddielan secures his objective, but UmTi backs of his to try and gank top again. This time it succeeds, and Licorice dies.
  • UmTi returns to Voidgrubs but only get 2 before he’s interrupted by Oddielan, who kills him with the help of Saint. Oddielan then goes and take the remaining grub.
  • Yeon and CoreJJ switch to top lane. While CoreJJ is ward, Licorice and Lyonz (who is roaming) forces out Yeon’s Flash. Yeon delays Licorice’s back, allowing Impact to take more turret plates down bot lane. Tempo plays.
  • UmTi tries to gank top, almost kills Lyonz. When the gank fails, UmTi leaves. Oddielan then comes up and ganks, Ulting onto Yeon. Yeon dies to Oddielan. LYON try to go for more, but Hena dies after turret diving to CoreJJ. Meanwhile, in top river, APA pushes Saint, who was providing supportive fire, away. 1-1
  • Impact again tries to fight Licorice 1v1. It ends the same way as last time with Impact dying. Yeon and CoreJJ go back to bot lane and push back Licorice, forcing his Flash. UmTi starts and takes all of the second set of Voidgrubs while Oddielan starts second Drake (Ocean).
  • Hena, Lyonz, and Oddielan turret dive Yeon, who dies to Oddielan. They then try to kill CoreJJ but UmTi has arrived by now and Lyonz is killed instead. As Hena tries to run away, Impact arrives and chases him down. Oddielan, meanwhile is killed is brought low by APA and the sniped by Yeon (who has respawned). In the end, 3-1 for TL. They also take outer bot turret for First Turret off of this prolonged fight.
  • UmTi tower dives Saint with Yeon and CoreJJ. CoreJJ gets the kill. Mid game ends with TL taking the gold lead (1.8k) but LYON still has more farm.

Late Game Highlights: LYON Bite Off More Than They Can Chew

  • Saint tries to poke APA while he’s roaming around top river, but APA engages on him and Ults him into UmTi and CoreJJ. UmTi gets kill credit.
  • Lyonz, Oddielan, and Hena dives CoreJJ and Yeon mid lane. Yeon dies to Hena. CoreJJ bounces Lyonz around, forcing him to Flash.
  • UmTi starts the third Drake (Mountain). After a little dancing, CoreJJ charges in and knocks up Saint. Oddielan uses his Ult to sow confusion. Licorice kills Yeon while Impact kills Saint. Azir then takes out Oddielan. Licorice tries to fight it out but he and Lyonz both end up dying to Impact. Hena runs and TL take the Drake. 4-1 for TL.
  • Oddielan, with Hena and Saint as back up, try to stop TL from taking their outer mid turret. TL still take the turret but Saint kills Yeon.
  • Licorice gets spotted out of position. Impact, APA, and CoreJJ go after him, but he manages to survive and dashes over the dragon pit wall. Both teams, who are following along disengage.
  • UmTi takes Herald uncontested. UmTi starts up Ruinous Atakhan but after they are spotted by back off. UmTi catches Saint out, drags him over to APA who kills him.
  • TL take Atakhan again. In response, LYON takes outer mid turret. TL set up to take 4th Drake, then taken it.
  • Both teams are setting up for Baron. Then comes lots of farming and posturing. UmTi releases Herald in red side bot jungle (probably ran out the timer). It roams bot together with Impact. With the help of minions, Herald takes the inner bot turret.
  • As TL start group up around mid, Oddielan uses his Ult and immediately removes Yeon from the map. However, UmTi manages to keep Hena way from the action, while Impact takes out Oddielan and, with the help of APA and CoreJJ chases down and kills Licorice. 2-1 for TL.
  • TL start and take Baron uncontested. TL take the fifth Drake. They are now on Soul Point.
  • Spotting Impact out of position, Oddielan Ults him but he escapes by going over top side Raptors’ wall. Meanwhile, Yeon and APA break open LYON’s base through top lane, taking both the base turret and the inhibitor.
  • Impact skirmishes and has to use his Ult. UmTi meanwhile, almost kills Saint under his Nexus turrets.
  • TL take base mid turret, inhibitor, and the upper Nexus turret. A lot of posture and sieging afterwards.
  • TL bot base turret. UmTi immediately goes in and grabs Licorice, who is killed be Yeon. UmTi takes out the last inhibitor while APA kills Hena and Impact kills Lyonz. Oddieland Saint are forced into their fountain as TL destroy their Nexus.

Post Game Analysis: LTA is Bloody but This Was Too Much

TL ends the game at 33:39 with a gold lead of 9.7k. The final score is 17-9 for TL. LYON’s lose in this game can be considered a text book example of gluttony. They just can’t stop themselves from going back for more. Starting with the tower dive against Yeon in bot lane, LYON repeatedly pull off a play, only to destroy whatever advantage they gain from it by going in for more and then dying.

Even with their primary move of taking out Yeon with Paranoia bites them in the butt because, while they focus down Yeon, the rest of TL are considerably strong and can capitalize on the momentary openings that LYON’s diving in presents. They just went for too much when it would have been better for them to back off after ALREADY SUCCEEDING.

Terms

Early Game: Any time before 6 minutes, first outer tower down, or first level 6 (whichever comes first).

Mid Game: Between early game and either 15 minutes, 2 inner towns down, half the players are level 11, or 3rd dragon killed.

Late Game: Any time after mid game.
