TL;DW – LEC Edition: FNC Return to Form and Show Up G2

Week 5, Day 2 of the LEC Spring Split 2. FNC vs G2.  FNC’s roster is Oscarinin (top), Razork (jungle), Humanoid (mid), Upset (bot), and Mikyx (support).  G2’s roster is BrokenBlade (top), SkewMond (jungle), Caps (mid), HansSama (bot), and Labrov (support).  FNC is 4-2, G2 is 3-2.

Game 1: G2 Strikes First

  • FNC drafts a trick team in this first game.  While Razork does have a strong engage, the rest of his team is not necessarily as capable of diving as quick and as deeply as he is.  This could leave him high and dry.  G2’s comp is much for synergistic, with 3 powerful front line unit who have excellent CC and 2 long ranged damage unit who will be difficult to get to.
  • As expected, G2’s comp works well.  They dominate the early game in every lane, have considerable control over the map in the mid game, and, despite a minor setback, barrel through the late game for a decisive win.

Game 2: FNC Counter

  • FNC draft a comp that, as stated by the analysists, is “very complicated”.  Several high burst damage characters who are relatively squishy and no real tank.  G2, on the other hand opt for a more conventional approach.
  • Despite G2 getting 2 early kills, FNC quickly start to take control of the fight.  Seems they knew something that the analysist didn’t.  It doesn’t matter how squishy your characters are if you just kill your opponents first.  They dominate every exchange through the mid game, picking off members of G2 left and right.
  • After ripping apart G2 in a team fight that spans half the map, FNC set up for Baron, assassinate G2’s jungle, take the objective, and use it to destroy G2s base.  Sometimes, unconventional works.

Game 3: LEC Rivalry Bout

  • Thanks to the Fearless mechanic, the champion’s chosen this time around are rather… unique on both sides.  While Gragas might be a staple in the LTA, it’s less common in the LEC.  And the Aurelion Sol is interesting no matter what region you’re in.
  • FNC greatly dominate the early game.  Razork is highly proactive, ganking multiple lanes to help tamp down the power of G2 carries.  2 team fight during the mid game go FNCs way, increasing their power considerably.  FNC’s ability quickly traverse the map means that anytime G2 try to start a fight against 1 or 2of them, the rest of the team can easily show up and turn the tide.
  • Even though G2 manage to claw back a few kills for themselves in the late game, the advantage that FNC build in the early and mid is far to much for them to over come.  What’s worse for G2 is that FNC end up getting the Chemtech Soul, making it hard to take them down.  Ultimately, FNC are able to systematically break into G2’s base and win the game.

Post Game Analysis: Dazed and Confused

  • Perhaps I’m misremembering but I was under the assumption that FNC was known as a team that somewhat flouts convention.  Either way, if they weren’t before, they are now.  FNC manages to overwhelm G2 in 2 of their games, demonstrating strong mechanical skill and situational awareness.
  • G2, on the other hand, continues to play at least than their peak.  We will have to see if this they are just having a bad week or if this current slump develops into something more serious.
  • At the end of this match, FNC are 5-1 and in second place in the region.  G2, meanwhile, is 3-3, and has fallen to 5th.
