Bethesda Says Loading Screen Are An Unwanted But Necessary Evil In 2025

Bethesda has built a legacy with games like Skyrim, Fallout, and Starfield. Offering players huge immersive worlds to explore. But there’s one thing that keeps popping up, and that’s loading screens. Those short breaks when you step through a door or fast-travel can feel like a buzzkill. Recently, a former Bethesda designer shed light on why these pauses are still part of the experience and why they’re not disappearing anytime soon. In an interview with VideoGamer on May 1, 2025, Bruce Nesmith, a key figure behind Oblivion and Skyrim, called loading screens a “necessary evil.” He explained that Bethesda’s massive game worlds demand a lot from your system. “I can’t have the interiors of all these places loaded at the same time as the exteriors,” Nesmith said. Without loading screens, the game could slow down or crash, which would ruin the fun far more than a brief wait.

Bethesda has experimented with alternatives, like loading content as you play, but Nesmith noted that this often causes “hitching”. Those choppy moments when the game stumbles. So, loading screens are a better option. It’s all about keeping those sprawling landscapes and detailed towns running smoothly.

What Players Think and What’s Coming

Fans have mixed feelings. Some, especially long-time players, wish loading screens were a thing of the past. “It’s 2025—can’t we move beyond this?” one user posted on IGN. Others see the logic. “I’d take a quick load over a laggy mess any day,” another fan replied. The debate flared up again after Oblivion Remastered launched on April 22, 2025, still sporting loading screens despite its fresh coat of paint. GameRant covered the release and the fan reactions in detail.

Looking forward, loading screens might stick around for The Elder Scrolls VI and beyond. But there’s hope! New tech like faster SSDs could trim those wait times down. For now, they’re part of the deal for Bethesda’s epic adventures. Curious about other gaming trends? Our news section has the latest updates.
