Stardew Valley Creator Says Fishing Minigame “Too Hard” At First

Stardew Valley, the hit farming simulator, lets you live life however you want it. You can plant crops, date locals, explore the mines, and of course, go fishing. However, the fishing minigame has garnered some criticism for its difficulty, and now the game’s creator, Eric Barone, also known as “ConcernedApe,” has addressed that difficulty.

Stardew Valley‘s Fishing

Fishing in Stardew Valley involves throwing out your line at a fishing spot, which brings up a meter with a little colored bar. A line moves up and down the meter, and you have to click right when the line is inside the colored bar to catch something. Click when the line is outside the ba,r and you get nothing. Many beginners, myself included, had difficulty with the timing, which can make fishing a chore until you finally get used to it.

“A Lot of People Hate It”

In an interview with PC Gamer, Barone stated, “I like fishing minigames, and I like Stardew Valley‘s fishing minigame.” He went on to say, “I know it’s controversial, a lot of people hate it, but I think it’s fun.” However, he also admitted that “My regret with the Stardew Valley fishing minigame is that I think it starts out too hard.”

“A Better Curve”

Barone went on to say,

“I think there should have been a better curve, so it starts easy and then it gets a little harder. Because you’re catching more difficult fish. But the way I did it, you start out with this tiny little bar, and it’s like ‘Ah, I should have started with the bar a little bigger.’ But I still think the fishing game is good overall.”

He also pointed out that you can now buy a training rod that “makes the fishing a lot easier. Although you can only catch fish below a certain tier and quality. But it’s good for training.”

Stardew Valley’s Legacy

Stardew Valley has an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating on Steam, so clearly the controversial fishing minigame wasn’t enough to soil people’s opinions of the game. It is considered a classic cozy game that anybody can enjoy regardless of skill level. Moreover, you can learn to master the fishing, and after a while, you might even love it like Barone does.
