Upcoming Adventure Game Matinta Draws Real World Inspiration

Matinta is an upcoming third-person adventure game where you play as Gracie, a magical dog. You’re on a mission to bring life back to the cursed world. The game is based on Brazilian folklore and draws inspiration from the real-life rainforests of Brazil.

The Inspiration for Matinta‘s World

According to GameRant, each of the game’s worlds takes inspiration from a distinctive South American location. These locations include the Pampas Plains, the Malta Atlantica rainforest, the Pantanal wetland, the Cerrado savanna, and, of course, the Amazon rainforest. When you first arrive at each of these levels, they are “fully devoid of color,” but as you solve puzzles and complete game objectives, you restore color and life to the world, providing a metaphor for restoring life to these real-world locations.

Brazilian Folklore

The game’s Steam page promises that you can “encounter and heal legendary creatures inspired by Brazilian folklore. According to GameRant, even the game’s title is a reference to folklore. It states that the title “comes from Matinta-Perera, a witch who was able to take the form of a bird. The mythological Matinta is typically a tricky and antagonistic figure . . . Matinta takes a more benevolent interpretation of the character, making her a wise creature who aids Gracie, but still possesses great power and the ability to shapeshift into a bird.”

Release Date?

Unfortunately, as of now, the game has no release date on its Steam page. Eter Games, the developer and publisher, has no previous releases on Steam, so it may be a while before the game sees a release. There is also currently no word on whether or not it will be released on the PlayStation 5, the Xbox Series X/S, or the Nintendo Switch 2.

Conclusion

Matinta looks like it will be a lush, vibrant experience with a strong narrative and an atmospheric presentation. It might also help inspire gamers to take action against the destruction of the real South American environments that inspired the game’s world. Although there is no release date yet, you can wishlist it on Steam and follow its development. Here’s hoping that the finished product lives up to its promises.
