Sea of Stars Adds Free Epilogue Expansion – New Content Revealed
Sea of Stars, the highly popular indie RPG from 2023, is bringing new content for fans to enjoy. The game has managed to far exceed any expectations that developer Sabotage Studios had in mind, so adding additional content for fans to enjoy is not necessarily a surprise. What is a nice treat, though, is that the expansion is completely free. The eight hours of additional gameplay should wet players’ appetites, and they will not have to wait long to try it.
Sea Of Stars Offers Free Expansion For More Nostalgic Joy
Sea of Stars was a massive success right from the day it launched in 2023. The JRPG hit the perfect blend of nostalgia and trending gameplay. It sold over 250,000 copies after just its first week out, and at last count in November of last year, it had over 6 million players. Those are incredible numbers for many games these days, especially an indie game. It rightfully earned several awards for its successes, including Best Independent Game at the Golden Joystick Awards and The Game Awards 2023, and was even nominated for Game of the Year at the Golden Joystick Awards and the Game Developers Choice Awards.
Sea of Stars saw so much success that the development team appears to want to build more off of that, launching a free expansion that adds 8 hours worth of new epilogue content. Sabotage Studio gave us a little insight on the DLC expansion, dropping a short trailer to introduce the theme.
The Throes of the Watchmaker DLC will bring Sea of Stars to the circus. Zale and Valere, the game’s lead protagonists, are being given new job classes, Juggler and Acrobat, as they take on the lead antagonist, Puppeteer. Players will also gain a new robot ally, The Artificer, lovingly nicknamed Arty. On top of the new storyline expansion and theme, there will also be some soundtrack additions, with Chrono Trigger’s Yasunori Mitsuda joining the original lead composer Eric W. Brown. The entire package is just wacky enough, fresh enough, and on brand enough to fit perfectly with the game’s built legacy. That it is free just makes it all the more exciting for fans.
Final Thoughts
The Sea of Stars DLC expansion is the second major content update dropped for the game by Sabotage Studios, following last year’s Dawn of Equinox update that altered combat and added 3-player co-op and a full Québécois localization. The studio is working on a new IP, known only as “Game 3”, which likely means the indie developer will shift focus away from Sea of Stars following this release. The Throes of the Watchmaker DLC will launch for free on May 20, 2025, and the base game is available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
