Square Enix Confirms Acclaimed Final Fantasy 7 Remake Coming to Switch 2

The first two parts of the Final Fantasy 7 remake have been acclaimed by both critics and gamers. However, gamers who primarily play on the Nintendo Switch have been left out of the massive experience due to the Switch’s limited specs. Now, with the advent of the Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo lovers will be able to experience the new version of Final Fantasy 7.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake

The first chapter of the remake, simply called Final Fantasy 7 Remake, was released in 2020 on the PlayStation 4. An enhanced version, titled Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade, came out for the PlayStation 5 in 2021 and PC in 2022. In 2024, the second chapter of the remake, titled Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, was released on the PlayStation 5 and PC. There is currently no release date set for the third and final chapter of the remake trilogy.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade on Nintendo Switch

With the Nintendo Switch 2’s more advanced specs, it can handle more complex games than the Switch 1. Naoki Hamaguchi, the director of the remake trilogy, stated that Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade will be released on the Switch 2, saying, “It means a lot to me that Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade is being released on a Nintendo platform . . . With the power of the Switch 2, we can now recreate Midgar with full specs.” Indeed, the clips shown in the “Creator’s Voice” reveal trailer look beautiful, and the animation runs fluidly.

What About the Rest of the Trilogy?

The trailer only confirmed that the first chapter will be released on the Switch 2, without any certain word about Rebirth or the as-yet-untitled third chapter. However, Hamaguchi did state that “with the release of the Final Fantasy Remake series on Switch 2, it would make me very happy if two generations connect and share a bond over the characters.” This indicates that there are at least plans to release the whole trilogy on the Switch 2, but there isn’t any actual confirmation as of the writing of this article.

Conclusion

Whether or not the rest of the trilogy comes to the Switch 2, gamers can look forward to playing Intergrade in a new way or for the first time. The Switch 2 is opening doors for massive games to make their Nintendo debut. And after all, since the Final Fantasy series got its start on the NES and SNES, it only seems right for the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy to find a home on a Nintendo console.
