GTA 6 vs. Star Wars: Who Will Win the Game vs. Movie Battle in 2026?
May 2026 will be a big time for geeks. GTA 6 will finally be released (assuming it doesn’t get delayed again), and the first new Star Wars film in seven years, The Mandalorian and Grogu, will hit theaters. With two massive franchises returning at the same time, fans are already pitting them against each other and wondering which one will win. Will people rush first to Vice City, or the galaxy far, far away?
People Have Ancitipated GTA 6 for Years
The second trailer for GTA 6 has already broken viewing records. Meanwhile, The Mandalorian and Grogu only has a twelve-second teaser so far. Of course, this could build anticipation for The Mandalorian and Grogu later on. The hype for Grand Theft Auto 6 might be high right now, but will that hype last for a whole year? It actually could, given that it’s been twelve years since GTA 5 and, as IGN pointed out, long waits can actually work in a game or movie’s favor. Long waits can make a new entry in a franchise into a real event.
The Mandalorian and Grogu is a TV spinoff
Not only has Disney been pumping out Star Wars content on Disney+ to the point of exhaustion, but The Mandalorian and Grogu isn’t a mainline Star Wars movie. Instead, it is a continuation of the Disney+ show The Mandalorian. While the show was a massive hit, its third season received mixed reception from fans, and Disney put out so much merchandise for the show that fans started to get tired of it. That fatigue might still be lingering when The Mandalorian and Grogu comes out, which might lead some people to stay home and play GTA 6 instead.
Conclusion
Star Wars will forever be an iconic franchise, but as much as I love it, I’m not convinced that The Mandalorian and Grogu will be the hit that Disney wants it to be. Meanwhile, fans have been loyally awaiting Grand Theft Auto 6 for years, and the release delay might even contribute to building the anticipation further. The mixed reception that Season 3 of The Mandalorian got might mean that some fans will skip The Mandalorian and Grogu. It will be interesting to see how both franchises fare when next May comes around, but right now, it looks like GTA 6 will come out on top.
