The Sims 4: Sim Deaths And How To Cause Them, Part 1
Whether you’re killing Sims for fun or story, or if you just wonder what could kill your Sims, we have a list for you! From old age to emotional overload, The Sims 4 has it all. Some of them are part of the base game, but many come from expansions and other game packs. So we’ve broken them down in order of release.
The Sims 4 Base Game
The base game has 11 ways to die. Two of them, Old Age and Overexertion, only affect Elders. And child Sims can only die from Drowning or Fire.
- Cow Plant: They started killing Sims in The Sims 2. If you don’t feed them regularly, they get hungry, then the “tongue” sticks out with a slice of cake on it as bait. Sims may be tempted to take the bait and get swallowed. The first time, they’ll be spit back out with a debuff. While the debuff is active, if they do it again, the cow plant eats them. The plant can then be milked for a life-extending drink.
- Drowning: Removing the ladder from a pool used to be a fast track to a Sim’s death, but in The Sims 4, they can still climb out, so you have to surround the pool with walls or fences at the edge. Their needs will decrease until they drown. If you have a Water Garden from Get Famous, leave the fish unfed, and the Sim will be pulled down, which speeds things up.
- Electrocution: Repairing electrical items and getting struck by lightning are the basic ways to get electrocuted. Get to Work, Seasons, and University added more objects and ways to do it. One example is to repair a broken low-quality fridge while your Sim has low Handiness skill and low needs while standing in a puddle. The first shock causes the Seriously Fried moodlet, and the second is lights out.
- Fire: It’s easy to cause fire in The Sims 4. Put a rug in front of a fireplace or cook with low Cooking skill to most easily cause a fire. Laundry Day Stuff, Fitness Stuff, and Paranormal Stuff added more sources of fire. The Sim just needs to catch fire and… woosh! You’ll have a visit from the Grim Reaper.
- Hunger: Starving a Sim is an easy one. Trap them in a room with no way out and no food sources.
- Meteorite: Death by Meteorite in The Sims 4 is easier than it sounds, but may take many attempts. Buy a telescope and send your Sim outside to stargaze or moongaze. If a meteorite is coming, there will be a notification and, if you don’t make the Sim move, they’ll be squished into a crater!
- Old Age: There’s nothing to do here except to leave the aging turned on and let your Sim age gracefully. When they reach the end of their lifespan, they’ll collapse and die. If you have Life & Death, they can die in their sleep as well.
- Overexertion: In The Sims 4, an Elder Sim can also die from Overexertion (as well as all of the other ways). You can cause Overexertion through woohoo, jogging, using the treadmill, or other workout equipment, and make them keep doing it even after they have the Exhaustion debuff.
Emotional Death

In The Sims 4, emotional deaths are caused by getting too many of a certain moodlet so that it escalates. We’ve listed some of the activities that cause these moodlets, but there are many more, so play around and have fun!
- Anger: For your Sim to die from Anger, they have to stack up a bunch of anger moodlets. When they have enough of them, they become Enraged, and that can result in a Cardiac Explosion. Anger moodlets can be generated by affairs, betrayal, yelling, engaging in mean interactions, painting an angry painting, cooking and eating Flaming Angry Spaghetti (Cooking 4), and getting in fights.
- Embarrassment: Embarrassment happens frequently in The Sims 4. It’s caused by things like being seen going to the bathroom or taking a shower, seeing someone else in the bathroom activities, having awkward conversations, and soiling themself in public. Once they have enough Embarrassed moodlets, they become Mortified, which can cause them to die from Embarrassment.
- Laughter: A stack of Playful moodlets can lead your Sim to become Hysterical and die from Hysteria. They can get Playful from taking a bubble bath, telling jokes, watching comedy on TV, browsing funny videos on the computer, and eating Silly Gummy Bear Pancakes.
More Deaths!
The Sims 4 has so many ways to die that we couldn’t detail all of them in one post, so we’ll be splitting it up into a series. Stay tuned for part 2! We’ll add links at the bottom of this post for each part of the series so you can find them easily. Happy Simming!
