Bubsy 4D Makes An Im-paws-ible Comeback at Gamescom
The very much berated and annoying Bobcat digs his claws into the Gamescom video presentation as a world premiere, with Bubsy 4D being a new entry in the cat-astrophic franchise, following up on the horrendous Bubsy 3D. This game graced the Sony PlayStation over 20 years ago. As well as coming short of the announcement of The Purrfect Collection.
Who is Bubsy?
Bubsy is a bobcat with an attitude and a bad sense of humor. Known for his cat puns and relentlessly annoying nature that nobody in their right mind sees as appealing, with even the world at it to end all his nine lives. Including the Woolies, the Dr. Eggman or Bowser of the Bubsy universe, as the series’ main villains, who are often seen as enemies throughout the stages, much like your typical Goomba enemy. However, one key thing about the original 2D platformers was Bubsy’s iconic ability to just… not live. With many things around his adventure ending it in one fell swoop.
The original release of his first game was on the Super Nintendo in May 1993, published by Accolade. As well as releasing it and its sequel on the SEGA Genesis, the older games have graced such other platforms as the Atari Jaguar, as well as PC. Ever since the disaster of a PlayStation title, the series had remained dormant until Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back, which was released on October 31, 2017, and was developed by Black Forest Games.
What is Bubsy 4D?
A sequel to the infamous Bubsy 3D, it is a 3D platformer starring the titular character as he goes on a brand new adventure. While the bobcat previously saw a revival years ago in 2019, with Bubsy: Paws on Fire! by developer Choice Provisions and published by UFO Interactive Games, this is the first brand new title in a few years–even longer since he has been able to explore the world of 3D!
This new title is being developed by the indie studio Fabraz. Fabraz is well-regarded for its work on Demon Turf, another 3D platformer. With Atari, in another surprising return, is set to publish the game.
What’s new about Bubsy 4D?
Featuring a stylish new design, sporting a white shirt and a red tie, as well as new moves and purr-sonality! Bubsy also gets a brand new roll move to traverse the stages with–much like a familiar blue creature with costumes to collect throughout, including the iconic yet with bad memories appearance from Bubsy 3D.
The team hopes to appeal to beginner and advanced players, which is in contrast to the prior titles’ more advanced difficulty–almost to an unfair degree. Hopefully, the days of fall damage and losing a live to simply entering a car are no more! What could pawsibly go wrong?
Like in previous games, the evil Woolies stand in Bubsy’s way, leaving him to tackle on the adventure with the support of fur-miliar characters: Terri, Terry, Virgil, and Oblivia. Exploring intergalactic, craft-themed worlds, each ending with a boss encounter. All in hopes of acquiring more yarn, including taking back his most prized possession: the Golden Fleece. Oh, and also saving all the stolen sheep that the Woolies transformed into the evil BaaBots.
The game is set to be composed by Fat Bard, and will feature a jazz, big band, and electro style of music that is looking to be a paws-itive addition to the game.
When will Bubsy 4D release?
While a definitive release date was not announced, it can be put on your wishlist on Steam today! As well, it is set to release on current platforms such as Nintendo Switch 1 & 2, PlayStation 4 & 5, Xbox, Epic Games Store, and GOG. Hopefully, this wise-cracking bobcat can swing back in style and truly be the beloved gaming mascot he dreamed of being since the 1990s.
