Onimusha Just Dropped Some Great Content at Gamescom 2025 – Here’s What’s New
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is an action-adventure game that follows the real-life legendary samurai Miyamoto Musashi in fantastical, reimagined Edo Japan, fighting demons called Genma. This will be the newest game in the series, which hasn’t seen a release in about 20 years. Gamescom just released new gameplay footage of the titular game, and here’s a breakdown of the trailer.Â

The trailer featured some gruesome in-game footage, and I love it! The narration seems like they are actual lines from the game; the Genma are pretty scary, and the fighting style is wild and seamless. From the trailer, we see some pretty awesome mechanics of weapon switching, though the main weapon you use is a katana. The graphics are impeccable, but not at all surprising given what Capcom has already been doing.
Since the last game came out on PlayStation 2, this is a refreshing story, with an amazing art style that redefines how we saw the Onimusha games. This really is a Capcom specialty, reimagining their older games into the modern era of gaming, just like how we re-experienced Resident Evil 2 and 4 in their remakes. I wouldn’t have expected anything less from Capcom, and I know there is a huge fanbase (including me) that cannot wait until its release next year.
Monstrous Enemies and Bosses
The biggest thing that stood out to me during the trailer was how horrifying the Genma actually looked. Literally something out of a horror movie. For instance, there’s a demon made up of literal faces, and let’s not forget the long-necked demon reminiscent of the teacher from Little Nightmares 2 (an awesome design of a horror game monster, BTW). The in-game fighting is actually pretty gory, which surprises the hell out of me, but I love it. There’s so much to unpack with this game, and I can’t wait for its release next year.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is the latest installment of the Onimusha series by Capcom, and the first game to come out in 20 years. Because of the series’ long hiatus, this game will feel smooth, with next-level graphics and an incredible original storyline that will engage audiences once it releases. Though a release date hasn’t been announced yet, it will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC sometime next year.
