World of Warcraft: Housing for Creative Adventurers Coming Soon August 26, 2025
After two decades of adventuring, slaying dragons, and occasionally getting stuck on a flight path, World of Warcraft is finally giving us something we’ve been begging for: player housing. That’s right, you can finally own a little slice of Azeroth that isn’t just a corner of the Lion’s Pride Inn. The upcoming “War Within” expansion is set to introduce “Dwellings,” a feature that promises to let us put down roots and show off our interior decorating skills.
But let’s be real for a second. When Blizzard first dropped this bombshell, the collective cheer from the community was probably loud enough to wake a slumbering Old God. Player housing! It’s the holy grail of MMO features, a staple in games like Final Fantasy XIV and The Elder Scrolls Online. But as the initial hype settled, a shadow of a memory crept in, a memory that rhymes with “schmarrisons.”
The ghost of Warlords of Draenor’s Garrisons still haunts many of us. What started as a cool personal base quickly became a content island that turned capital cities into ghost towns. We were all trapped in our little fortresses, managing follower missions and forgetting what other players even looked like. So, the big question on everyone’s mind is: will Dwellings be Garrisons 2.0?
World of Warcraft Finally Gets Player Housing—But Is ‘Dwellings’ Just Garrisons 2.0

Dwellings vs. Garrisons: A Tale of Two Homesteads
Blizzard seems to have learned a painful lesson from the Garrison fiasco. They’ve been very clear that Dwellings will be a purely cosmetic and social feature. Think of it less as a mandatory command center and more like your own personal trophy room, a place to hang your hat (and your giant, ridiculously oversized pauldrons).
Associate Game Director Maria Hamilton has stressed that there will be no player power tied to Dwellings. You won’t find an auction house, a mission table, or profession trainers in your cozy new home. The goal is to avoid creating a system that players feel forced to engage with for progression. It’s all about creativity, expression, and maybe a little bit of showing off.
This is a massive relief. It means Dwellings will be a feature for those who want it, a sandbox for roleplayers, collectors, and anyone who’s ever wanted to prove they have a better eye for design than the local Gnomish architect.
So, What Can You Actually Do with Your House?
The core idea behind Dwellings is customization. You’ll be able to collect furniture and decorative items from all corners of World of Warcraft. This is where the real fun begins. That ugly vase you got from a quest in Stranglethorn Vale back in 2006? It might just be the perfect centerpiece for your coffee table.
Blizzard has also promised that you won’t need to be a mythic raider to get the coolest stuff. In an interview, Hamilton explicitly stated, “We’re not gonna put a beautiful bookcase behind killing a raid boss.” Furnishings will come from a wide variety of content, including old dungeons, world quests, and achievements, making it accessible to players of all styles.
Even better, Dwellings are account wide. Once you unlock a house, all your characters on that account and faction can use it. No more decorating a dozen different homes for your army of alts. You’ll get one for your Horde characters and one for your Alliance crew, simplifying the whole process.
Creating a Community, Not an Island
One of the most exciting aspects of Dwellings is the neighborhood system. You won’t just have a house floating in a void; you’ll be part of a community. You can choose to live in a neighborhood with your guildmates, friends, or even be placed with random players if you’re looking to meet new people.
This social element is what was sorely missing from Garrisons. Imagine hosting a guild meeting in your living room, throwing a housewarming party, or just chilling on your porch with your neighbors. It’s a feature designed to bring people together, not isolate them.
For the roleplaying community, this is a game-changer. Moon Guard’s Goldshire is about to get some serious competition.
Is This What World of Warcraft Needs?
After 20 years, World of Warcraft is more than just a game; it’s a world. Giving players a permanent, personal space within that world feels like a natural and long-overdue evolution. It adds a layer of depth and personalization that goes beyond transmog and mount collecting.
Will everyone love it? Probably not. Some players will set up their house once and never visit it again, and that’s perfectly fine. But for many, Dwellings will be a new reason to log in, a new collection to chase, and a new way to connect with the game and its community.
It’s a chance to build something that is uniquely yours in a world we’ve all shared for so long. So go ahead, start planning your layout. I’ve already got my eye on a prime spot with a view. Just promise me you won’t put up any tacky lawn gnomes. Or do. It’s your house, after all.
