The Wizards of the Coast has decided the 5e has run its course for Dungeons and Dragons. Recently, they announced a new version of DND coming called One DND. The information we have on One DND is slowly coming out. The changes can be good or bad depending on who you talk to. Nevertheless, it’ll be a huge game-changer for future players of DND.
What’s New in One DND
According to the One DND FAQ, this new edition will “take what we love about the 5th edition and update the gameplay rules”. The rules will supposedly be ‘backward compatible’ with 5e. This means that if you have a book made for 5e, you can use the One DND rules with it. Looking further, we find plans for a bastion to be added to the game from play-testing. The bastion will work as a stronghold or a home base for players to retire. Of course, that’s not all the bastion will hold. The bastion will have facilities for the players to use, and it will generate passive income as well. There will even be an opportunity for you to build up points for your bastion and trade that for goods.
Feats are also getting an upgrade in One DND, which is now linked to the character level, and as you level up, those feats will also get stronger. You also get a low-level feat based on the background you choose. Along with feats, ability scores will be improved upon as well. Ability scores will now be floating, so you can put your scores wherever instead of forcing them into certain scores.
What’s New About Classes in One DND
We can’t discuss every class change since there’s so much, but here are some big changes. One of the best changes right away is the change to Barbarians. Barbarians can now rage outside combat for 10 minutes and use that rage to get help with certain ability checks. Bards, excitingly, will be getting a much better and improved bardic inspiration, allowing them to do a lot more for their party.
Druids will now have the ability to wild shape as a bonus action. Fighters have another subclass called Brawlers, where they are more welcome to use their fists in battle. Monks are getting a new subclass, replacing Way of the Four Elements with Warrior of the Elements. This makes it so Monks don’t use Ki points, instead using elemental strikes. Paladins didn’t get too much, but Smite is now a Paladin-exclusive spell. The Ranger is noted to be changed to Tasha’s Cauldron’s version of Rangers. Rogues get the ability to use a cunning strike now. Sorcerers will get Tasha’s Cauldron’s version for subclasses Aberrant Mind and Clockwork Soul. Warlock’s three core pacts are now being changed to invocations, and you can have more invocations as a whole. Finally, Wizards are losing the Necromancy and Transmutation subclass and making the others more dynamic.
The Ugly in One DND
Of course, not all of this is well received across the internet. One of my distastes for the new version is how they are completely ridding the game of half races (half-elves, half-orcs, etc.). However, this allows you to customize your character more, which I like. It’s also been argued that having auto crits or auto failures built into the system when you roll a 20 or 1 isn’t how everyone plays. Boons seem to be another ugly part of One DND where people do not like how they are so sub-par. Another dislike is the Holy Order for Clerics; it allows Them to choose what type of Cleric they are early on. Some of these changes seem unnecessary, but hopefully, they will be changed more as playtests continue.
