Recommended Loadout and Initial Strategy
Before engaging The Nightmare, it’s best to equip yourself for a long-range fight. Sniper rifles, DMRs, and assault rifles with good range are ideal, as you’ll need to maintain distance to avoid its most damaging attacks.
The Nightmare has two primary attacks in the first phase: a poison breath that deals heavy damage and a volley of slow-moving, tracking projectiles. Use the cover in the arena to block the poison cloud, and either shoot the projectiles out of the air or keep moving to evade them. Your main goal at the start is to target the smaller flower buds scattered across the boss’s stalk. Firing on the main body will do little to no damage, so focus exclusively on these weak points.
Phase One: Destroy the Buds
When the fight begins, concentrate your fire on the smaller flower buds. Each time you destroy one, you will inflict a significant amount of damage to the boss’s overall health. While you do this, stay mobile and use the environment to shield yourself from The Nightmare’s poison and projectile attacks.
After you have destroyed all the smaller flowers, The Nightmare will become temporarily immune to damage. It will then summon a wave of zombies and mutant spiders. You must clear out these enemies to force the boss out of its immunity phase. Once the wave is defeated, a new set of smaller flower buds will sprout on its stalk.
Repeat the process of destroying the buds, but be aware that zombies will now begin to spawn continuously. It’s crucial to keep moving to avoid getting surrounded while you focus your fire on the boss.
Final Phase: Target the Main Flowers
Once The Nightmare’s health drops to its final third, the smaller buds will no longer appear. The boss’s three main, giant flowers will now become its weak points. These larger flowers will glow orange right before they attack. This is your window to deal damage.
Pick one of the giant flowers and wait for it to glow. As it prepares to attack, unload your weapon into its glowing orange “mouth.” This is the most challenging part of the fight, as you’ll need to balance attacking the weak point, dodging the incoming attack, and managing the constant stream of zombies. The grenade launcher ability is particularly effective here, as it can deal massive damage to the giant flower buds.
When a giant flower has taken enough damage, it will wilt and stop glowing. This is your cue to shift your focus to the next one. Repeat this strategy until all three giant flowers have wilted. Once the final one is defeated, the boss will fall, triggering the concluding cutscene.
