Apple made a huge announcement this weekend, one that will make a certain generation very happy. Up until this point, game emulators have been strictly banned on the App Store. This meant players, especially millennials, who wanted to relive games from the past had to find other avenues. People now be able to use their Apple products. Friday’s update stated that game emulators are now allowed in the App Store, though they must follow “all applicable laws.” Apple’s main competitor, Android, has long allowed apps that have downloads of classic games. It seems the company may be allowing these against their will. An antitrust lawsuit was filed against Apple in the United States. The lawsuit accuses the company of trying to stomp out cloud game streaming apps and super apps.
Outside of emulators, the company is also responding to pressure from the European Union to allow music streaming apps. Spotify was famously upset with the tech giant for failing to update their app in a timely manner, causing problems for users. Overall, it is an update that should be beneficial to all users.
Long Overdue For Apple
Apple has always done things differently. Some of it has given them the edge over their competition. Others, like these previous bans, hindered the company and drove consumers to their competitors. It makes everything easier for people who are using their products.
Ultimately, people were finding a workaround anyway. This simply makes it easier for the consumers. Whether the company likes it or not, this is a good move and one they will hopefully see positive results from.
