The rise of the personal computer meant the rise of PC games. I have vivid memories of heading to my local Target and stopping by the computer games aisle. There were hundreds of titles to choose from, and it always seemed like new ones popped up every week. Discs are a thing of the past and have now entered the collectibles realm. While some collect for value, others collect to preserve history.
PC Games Collectors: Preserving History
I’m sure everyone has an oddball game they remember from their childhood. While some games, like the Backyard Sports franchise, were mainstream, others weren’t. Finding a copy of certain games can be incredibly difficult. Some didn’t even make it to a home console release. Collectors are trying to make sure those PC games don’t get lost in history.
Because of how fast the gaming community has grown, it feels strange to have to fight to preserve something that was mainstream a mere 20 years ago. However, the tech industry has exploded to the point where if we are going to remember its beginning, we need people to help preserve its history.
Grading PC Games
Sports card grading has been around for a long time. Sending a card in for grading gives it legitimacy and tells the community the condition. PC Games have started to enter the realm of grading. More companies are starting to offer grading services for old games. Roller Coaster Tycoon is one of the most sought after ones and many high grades have started to pop up online.
As a 33-year-old, I don’t consider myself an old person. Hearing something from my childhood needs to be preserved changes that. This is a cool community, and the collectors who preserve history today will help us tell generations how the gaming industry got its beginnings.
