A Verge Journalist Receives Valve Ban After Revealing Deadlock

Portal Turret in Valve's Headquarters

A recent Valve ban of a Verge journalist, which came on the back of a report about an unannounced game called Deadlock, has put up a loud debate amongst gamers. A stand-off between journalistic freedom and the demands by the industry about confidentiality, without anything signed between the parties has erupted a debate across the internet.

Underwraps Project

Deadlock is a very secretive Valve project that is a third-person shooter that is apparently on the rise amongst those lucky enough to get in its closed playtest. A post of gameplay footage by The Verge’s Sean Hollister, along with the account of levels and such, had Valve quickly responding. While no actual NDA was signed, there did appear to at least be a tacit agreement among players and testers not to discuss the game in public until Valve made its proper announcement.

Trust and Confidentiality

Reports indicate that Valve handled the Deadlock playtests in a very casual nature, granting access to the game without the usual strict legal constraints. Having said that, a popup in-game asked participants not to share information, which Hollister worked around and posted his impressions to the public. Valve responded by banning him from future testing sessions, a reaction that has received mixed responses from the gaming community. Some support Valve’s actions, saying that they took the right action to maintain trust and confidentiality. Others argue that without a formal NDA, The Verge was within their right to publish the story.

Was it Ethical?

The incident has thrown up very valid ethical questions regarding the boundaries of journalism more so in tech and gaming industries. While publications like The Verge need some degree of exclusivity to garner readership, actions of this nature only serve to hurt relationships with developers. The community reacts to this, where most people believe that The Verge broke an unsaid code of trust. Although no actual “gentleman’s agreement” had been broken, the backlash of the fans and Valve’s ban in retaliation shed a little light on the risks of a journalist being more concerned with breaking news than the damage caused to industry relationships.  Can Valve and The Verge come to a better understanding in the future?

Adjusting the Approach

This could establish a precedent for the future of early-stage gaming project reporting. With more and more developers turning to informal means for sharing builds of games in development, both parties may have to adjust their approach to handling sensitive information. This episode demonstrates how important it is for communication to be as clear as possible between developers and journalists, to effectively ensure that expectations are met with NDAs or mutual understanding. Did Valve make the right move?  Many think they did.

Conclusion

Essentially, the lesson learned from the incident of the Deadlock would be an ambivalent relationship between transparency and confidentiality in gaming journalism. The fallout could very well affect how journalists and developers plan and execute early-stage coverage in the future—to strike a balance between respect for the freedom to report and the trust of the industry. This will serve as a sharp lesson to both parties as it only continues to shape how leaks and early previews are treated in the future, probably leading to a more well-defined and mutual understanding of expectations and boundaries.
