Spider-Man 2 was released almost a full year ago. This game has had quite the interesting fan feedback. Critically, the game was received very well by major reviewers and critics. However, in the months after, it seems like many of the fans had mixed opinions about many game elements. One thing that could have saved this was the release of post-launch DLC. At the time of writing, roughly a full calendar year later, there is still no news for Spider-man 2 DLC.
Insomniac Games Troubled Year
Let us address the elephant in the room. Last winter, at about the end of the year in December, Insomniac Games were the victims of a wide-scale hack. Tons of information on soon-to-be-released games, DLC, and future project plans were taken hold of. Substantially worse, the hackers got their hands on the personal and very private information of many Insomniac employees. The hacker group demanded money for this information, which was not given to them, and thus, they released the information online, for everyone to see.
First off, let the writer be very clear here. This is an incredibly sensitive topic to touch on. If it was just future games being spoiled, that would be one thing, but people’s livelihoods and safety were put on the line, and this was no laughing matter. What happened was a criminal act, and it was morally reprehensible. There were leaks found of potential DLC for Spider-Man 2. The big one is that there was a post-launch expansion originally in the works for the game. There were leaked character models of supervillains who would have appeared in this expansion.
Spider-Man 2’s Lost DLC
The Beetle was the character model in question that was found. Not the original one, the Janice Lincoln version. Janice Lincoln is the daughter of L. Thompson Lincoln, otherwise known as Tombstone. Keen fans will know that Tombstone was a prominent villain in the sidequest story of the original Spider-Man game for the PS4. In that game, he had a criminal ring he was in charge of that Spider-Man put a stop to. In Spider-Man 2, he again made an appearance, this time as a reformed character, which was quite a nice touch.
Not much is known about this apparent story expansion. As mentioned earlier, all the fans are aware of is a character model, nothing else. In terms of speculation, it’s interesting to see what this would have entailed. Perhaps the Beetle would have been trying to start her own underground criminal business, or maybe it was about her trying to break free from that life, just like her father. Fans can only speculate at this point. An even greater question is “When will this DLC be released, if at all?”.
Spider-Man 2’s Future
The unfortunate answer is probably never. Insomniac has released some small updates to the game in the months since its release, changing the visuals of suits and even adding some new ones in. But in terms of greater story expansion, Spider-Man 2 has gotten nothing. The answer to this lack of news has to do with the recent hack.
That hack killed company morale, revealing Insomniac’s future plans until 2030. It has been a full year, and there has been zero talk by the developers about a story expansion. It seems like it was silently dropped behind the scenes, and they are putting effort into the next game. Apparently, from the leaks, the next game is a Venom spin-off game. This will be very interesting to see how they handle that. After that, it could be Spider-Man 3, in however many years that takes. It’s truly unfortunate since this story ends on a bit of a bittersweet, defeating note. Let’s hope Insomniac is recovering from this hack and they can bounce back stronger than ever.
