Tony Pankhurst was born in Hastings, East Sussex on January 13, 1957. He started a journey into the world of entertainment at just 17 years old as a Butlins Redcoat. That’s the name given to certain staff members at Butlin’s holiday camps in the UK. From there, he experienced a career that lasted for more than 40 years. Other than his role in The Park Pictures Anthology, Pankhurst took on the roles of radio presenter and MC. He also had a host of featured, walk-on, and stand-in roles in projects such as The Crown, Eastenders, Downton Abbey, and many more. He was quite the popular actor.

In a tribute page created by his family, it was revealed Pankhurst died on May 9. His funeral service was held on June 7 at Hastings Crematorium. On that page, he is described as being a dedicated fan of Brighton & Hove Albion F.C. For his funeral service, people who came to pay their respects were asked to wear blue and white, the team’s colors.  His family is asking anyone who wishes to pay their respects further to make a donation to Hospice in the Weald using the link found on that tribute page. The staff there helped take care of Pankhurst in his final weeks. Supermassive Games made a £200 donation with a statement attached that reads, “We are saddened to hear of his passing and thank him for helping us create The Curator, a character loved by many.”

His Role as The Curator

Although not the voice of The Curator, Pankhurst is the face of the character who is cloaked in mystery. He helped bring life to a figure that has remained a constant throughout the four current horror games currently within The Dark Pictures Anthology. In order, those titles are Man of Medan, Little Hope, House of Ashes, and The Devil in Me. The Curator’s role is to guide players throughout those games as they make choices that determine the often bleak fates of the characters that they control. He is an ominous and omnipotent presence that quickly became a fan favorite.

The Curator is the primary focus of the opening theme of those games, always making a dramatic entrance to a cover of “A Conversation With Death” performed by Khemmis. Many people who have played the games have found it to be their favorite part. The digital version of Pankhurst’s likeness brings a certain intensity to the sequences that make them all the more better. He will certainly be missed by those who love the horror genre of video games, especially those who found The Curator to be the best part of The Dark Pictures Anthology. Our thoughts and prayers are  with his family, the developing team, and the gaming community during this difficult time.
