Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Remake Reportedly in Development as Ubisoft Uploads New Music Tracks
Video game music enthusiasts may have spotted something unusual from Ubisoft, known for games such as the Assassin’s Creed franchise; Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege; the WatchDogs franchise and the Far Cry franchise.
Ubisoft uploaded 18 songs from Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag to their music channel on YouTube. While this implies a Black Flag Remake, or at least an announcement of one, Ubisoft has not yet made a formal announcement or teaser.
Black Flag Remake Confirmed?
Fans of the swashbuckling assassin game dubbed the potential Black Flag remake “Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced.” However, a report from Insider Gaming states that the remake, codenamed Obsidian, is already in development and is scheduled to come out by the end of the United Kingdom’s fiscal year, ending on March 31, 2026.
According to Insider Gaming’s sources, via writer Tom Henderson, marketing for the Black Flag remake was supposed to begin in January, with a release in March. While the dates correlate, Henderson stated that some material didn’t succeed in getting the message out.
According to Henderson, the news outlet saw materials of a Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake, expected to launch on January 16, 2026, and marketing would occur in December 2025. However, the marketing campaign has not yet taken place, and some people assume the game may be a shadowdropped release. If the Prince of Persia remake is released this year, in the aforementioned manner, it could be a AAA sleeper hit of 2026.
Henderson also wrote that due to recent security breaches at Ubisoft, changes have been difficult to detect. However on X (formerly Twitter), someone noticed that the Prince of Persia website received backend changes implying an imminent release.
Where Did This Come From?
Original documents from Ubisoft said that marketing for the Black Flag Remake would begin in January and after the release of the Prince of Persia remake. Unfortunately, as of writing, there is no concrete proof of marketing.
Games Radar+’s Scott McCrae reported that Matt Ryan, the voice of Black Flag’s protagonist Edward Kenway, confirmed news of a Black Flag remake. Ryan told a fan that they may have to beat the game a subsequent time. According to McCrae, in spite of age ratings, updates on Steam, leaks and web domains, Ubisoft has not made any official statement. McCrae refers to Ubisoft’s silence, excluding the uploads to YouTube, as “intentionally trolling fans.”
If McCrae’s statement regarding Ubisoft trolling fans is true, it could be the least egregious form of trolling Ubisoft has done, given their history of anti-consumer practices.
About Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag came out in 2013. In this game, pirates rule the Caribbean and form an anarchic Republic with the foundations of corruption, greed and cruelty. Players play as Edward Kenway, a brash young captain trained by Assassins and is full of charisma and brutality. Edward has the ability to switch from the signature Hidden Blade of the Assassin’s Order to flintlock pistols and cutlass swords. The game has Very Positive reviews on Steam and is Playable on Steam Deck.
On reddit, someone noted that the reason Ubisoft is interested in remaking Black Flag is to reuse assets from Skull and Bones, Ubisoft’s pirate RPG released in 2024. They added:
“They also have a ton of pirate-y assets made for Skull & Bones that they obviously haven’t gotten a full return on investment from. Say what you will about that game but it looks beautiful. With some retouching, those assets could easily be used for a Black Flag remake as well, I think that’s one of the main reasons Black Flag was chosen first but we know it won’t be the last Assassin’s Creed game getting a remake.”
Skull and Bones currently has Mixed reviews on Steam, and the game is Playable on Steam Deck.
