What to Know About Aestri Yazar in Dead by Daylight? 06/06/24

On Monday, Dead by Daylight released its newest DLC: Dungeons & Dragons. Players can now play as The Lich (Vecna) and Aestri Yazar. While many may be familiar with the Dead by Daylight universe, players may not know much Dungeons and Dragons lore.

Vecna is somewhat more familiar to players as the big bad of Stranger Things goes by that name and rumors existed of the Netflix iteration of Vecna being the newest killer. Aestri Yazar, on the other hand, is virtually unknown. What do we know of this character?

Aestri Yazar is an Original Character

If one is looking for information within the lore of Dungeons and Dragons, that one will be disappointed. The reason is that Aestri is an original character made specifically for Dead by Daylight. That does not mean there is nothing we can learn about her from Dungeons and Dragons.

Aestri is an elven bard. Bards, in Dungeons and Dragons, are often played on the sidelines. Using a mixture of magic and song, Bards will help friends and hinder foes with their lyrical prowess. This does not mean Bards are not capable fighters while in battle. It only means bards will work in the background for as long as possible.

Aestri’s bardic work is best seen in her perks. The best example is  Bardic Inspiration. When the player presses the ability button a d20 dice will roll and your character perform a 15-second song on the lute. Depending on what is rolled, your character will either scream or grand progression on generator repair.

  • 1 causes your character to scream.
  • 2-10 grants +1% repair progress on skill checks.
  • 11-19 grants +2% repair progress on skill checks.
  • 20 grants +3% repair progress on skill checks.

Mirrored Illusion allows characters to create an illusion. After completing 50% of a generator, Mirror Illusion becomes available. Players can press the ability button next to a chest, totem, generator, or Exit Gate. A static illusion of your character will appear for a short time.

Still, Sight grants the ability to see the auras of the killer, all generators, totems, and chests within a specific vicinity. Your character needs to stand still for a brief period. This can be helpful when looking for something specific on the map that might be missed while running.

Of these three perks, Bardic Inspiration seems to be the most useful as it grants characters a bonus on skill checks while repairing generators. The faster the generator is repaired the faster one can leave the trials.

Mirrored Illusion may have its uses at times. If a teammate is in a chase with a character, another character could slip in, drop an illusion by a totem, and use that to distract a killer for a few moments. These few seconds could be the difference between life and death for another character.

Still, Life seems like the less viable of the three perks. It could be helpful for newer players to find the location of generators, totems, and other needed items but there are much better perks that do the same thing.

Aestri is one of two skins available for this character. Only two members of “The Troupe” are known to us. Baermar Uraz is another skin available if one wishes to play as a male human rather than a female elf. It is unknown at this time if there are more members of The Troupe although some of the player base has asked BHVR to include skins of new Dungeons and Dragons characters of different races.

Aestri Yazar Was Tricked into the Trials

Aestri’s lore speaks of The Troupe finding out some disturbing news. The various evils in the land began disappearing due to a “new magic.” While villagers find the news joyous, Aestri and Baermar are troubled. This is due to a theory in Dungeons and Dragons that good tipping the balance to ultimate victory would be just as disastrous as evil ultimately winning. The Troup decides to find out the origin of this new magic and how to stop it. While many villages meet their presence with hatred, others are willing to help.

Eventually, The Troupe is led to the Rotting Tower, home of Vecna, the Arch-Lich. The two are disturbed to find the tower is empty. Vecna and his minions are nowhere to be found. While looking through the desolate structure, the two find a scroll written specifically for Bards. Baermar puts the words to song while a fog envelopes the two. The two realize too late that this scroll is a form of the new magic and are whisked from their universe to The Entity’s Trials.

The lore leads to one large question. The Troupe was taken by The Entity while trying to discover why various forms of evil disappeared from the land. This includes Vecna, who was taken by a tome which summed a more ancient evil. Does this mean more characters from Dungeons and Dragons might make an appearance in Dead by Daylight? This would not be the first this has occurred.

BHVR teamed with Capcom to bring DLC from the Resident Evil series on two occasions. Imagine having a Barbarian, Bard, Mage, and Thief playing against Vecna. With the roll of the dice, all four characters escape the trial until the next. We can only hope Aestri will be the first of many survivors from Dungeons and Dragons.
