Ah yes, the Alien Blaster of Fallout: New Vegas. The Fallout universe is full of exciting gear and weapons to discover across its vast retro-futuristic post-apocalyptic world. Obsidian’s Fallout: New Vegas continues this tradition by offering players a plethora of unique weapons to choose from as they navigate the harsh Mojave desert.
From the 10mm pistol, to the nuke-launching Fat Man, New Vegas contains no shortage of wonderful weapons to destroy your enemies with. One of the most iconic weapons in the franchise’s history, the Alien Blaster, returns in New Vegas as a hidden weapon. In this article, we will examine how to obtain this powerful weapon and why it can be an essential part of any player’s arsenal.
An Iconic Weapon
Of all the unique and hidden weapons in the history of the Fallout series, the Alien Blaster has had a consistent presence in every iteration of the game, not excluding the modern entries. Normally placed somewhere off the beaten path, it is generally considered worth the time and effort to seek out when considering its immense power.
In Obsidian’s Fallout: New Vegas, the Alien Blaster returns, albeit with a few caveats. Nonetheless, players who set out to find this weapon by following the right steps will be treated to a fun, out-of-this world encounter along with an extremely valuable reward for their troubles.
Time To Get Wild
The first thing players need to do to get the Alien Blaster is choose the Wild Wasteland perk. Wild Wasteland is an interesting perk that changes certain encounters in the game, often to bizarre or zany effect. This perk is worth getting anyway if you want a little comic relief in your otherwise long, hard journey through the Mojave Wasteland, or have already completed your first playthrough and want to experience the game in a different light. This perk MUST be chosen during character creation in the beginning of the game, otherwise you can only obtain it through the DLC Old World Blues with its respec system.
UFO Hunting
After selecting the Wild Wasteland perk, players will need to travel to the far north of the map. The easiest way to find the blaster is to travel to Horowitz Farmstead, northwest of the North Strip Gate and east of Jacobstown, then go directly north until you see a flying saucer resting atop a distant ridge. Keep walking toward the ship and eventually you will see three aliens standing there.
These aliens are armed with laser weapons and will attack you on sight, so dispatch them quickly then look for the body of the Alien Captain. Loot his body and collect the Alien Blaster along with its ammo, alien power cells, which you will find a limited number of.
A Good Blaster At Your Side
The Alien Blaster requires an Energy Weapons stat of 75 to use it effectively. It possesses high damage output as well as a decent DPS stat, and has almost no spread, making it an extremely accurate weapon. It also has a critical multiplier of 100%, which, when combined with the Better Criticals perk, gives every shot a 50% increase in critical hit damage.
With the right stat and perk investment, this already highly deadly ray gun can achieve god-tier power when wielded by the player character. This weapon is perfect for when you need a quick, high-damage dealing weapon when running backwards away from a pesky Deathclaw.
The Downside
When attempting to track down the Alien Blaster, players should keep in mind the limited amount of ammo available for it. You will only find about 140-250 alien power cells on the Alien Captain’s body, and these are all you will get. The only other ways to get more alien power cells are to use mods or exploits such as this.
However, if you are of the more ethical nature and refuse to use mods or exploits, then maybe just keeping this weapon as a last resort defensive measure would suffice. All in all, the Alien Blaster is a neat little addition to New Vegas that has practical, but somewhat limited use as a handheld superweapon.
Having A Blast In Boston
As mentioned earlier, the Alien Blaster has made an appearance in every Fallout game from the beginning, so it comes as no surprise that it can be found within Fallout 4’s Commonwealth. Acquiring the blaster involves hunting down a UFO crash site, then following a trail of blood left by the ship’s pilot into a cave where the alien can be dealt with and the blaster picked up.
An interesting note for this version of the Alien Blaster is that, with the proper stats, can be modified to fire fusion cells rather than alien blaster rounds. This comes with a slight decrease in overall damage but lets the player get more utility out of the weapon in the long run.
