2014’s Alien: Isolation was praised by fans of the Alien franchise upon release. It received positive reviews and is generally regarded as a great addition to the Alien storyline. Recently, we’ve seen a resurgence of gamers returning to the spooky halls of the Sevastopol station, eager to take another stab at the stealth-horror story. So, what’s going on? Why are so many people reminiscing on this now classic space game in 2024? Join us as we explore the exciting revival of Alien: Isolation and what makes it a standout experience once again.
Romulus Reignites a Franchise
The most obvious reason Alien: Isolation is seeing a return to the spotlight is the recent release of Alien: Romulus. The new film bridges the gap between Alien and its sequel, Aliens. With Alien: Isolation taking place around the same time, fans are returning to the game to compare and contrast the two pieces of media. Of course, those who worked on the film knew this would happen and intentionally placed some references from the game in the set design for Romulus.
Anyone who’s played Isolation knows about the emergency phones. They act as save points throughout the game and give a heightened sense of danger, as you can’t watch your back while saving. There are other things like this that require interaction in the game, such as levers and door handles. They bring even more tension to an already terrifying story because it’s impossible to tell if something is behind you. Aside from that, every gamer knows if you have the chance to save, something more sinister is probably on the horizon.
The Romulus team thoughtfully placed these emergency phones in the background of the film, blatantly connecting Isolation to the main line films. They act as more than easter egg, though. The phones are a warning that something bad is about to happen to one of the film‘s characters. It’s an ominous little connection, but it really harkens back to that anxious dread of waiting for the game to save.
Alien: Isolation‘s Place in the Timeline
The events in Alien: Isolation take place in the year 2137, 15 years after the first Alien film. We play as Amanda Ripley, the daughter of the last survivor of the Nostromo (and protagonist of the original quadrilogy), Ellen Ripley. Alien: Romulus takes place five years after this, placing it in 2142. That’s a short enough time gap that fans could be replaying the game to refresh their memories in hopes of more meaningful connections in the film.
There was some speculation in some of the film’s early development that Romulus might have been a continuation of Amanda’s story. There were also theories going around that she might somehow make an appearance as a character in the film. Of course, this isn’t the direction that the writers took for the film, but it certainly raises a good point as to why players are reliving the Alien: Isolation experience. Overall, much like the films, Alien: Isolation is a timeless story that holds up great even 10 years later and we will likely see it spike in popularity again when the next Alien film inevitably releases.
