Many of these characters are villagers who can dwell on the player’s island as residents. Some villagers command a lot of attention due to their personalities or designs. Barold is a rather polarizing villager; hated by some and loved by others. Here is what you need to know about him.
Who is Barold?
Barold is a gray bear cub villager who first appeared in Animal Crossing: New Leaf for the Nintendo 3DS. Bear cub villagers are unique as they are the only species available in the child stage of the animal they are based on. Barold has gray fur and one of his distinguishing traits is darker hair around his face that resembles a five o’clock shadow. His initial outfit is an animal-stripes tee, giving him a caveman appearance. He has the lazy personality, meaning he is generally laid-back, though obsessive over certain topics like food. Barold will seem childish in conversations and he often makes strange remarks. His birthday is on March 2, making him a Pisces.
As mentioned, villagers in Animal Crossing can become fan favorites from their designs alone. However, some become hate magnets for the same reason. Barold is one of these characters whose design is considered repulsive by many. The combination of his glasses, pink lips, and apparent beard is often called creepy and unnerving. He has even been called one of the ugliest villagers in the game. Adding to this is the design of his home, which resembles a surveillance center. To be fair, this is likely due to his dream goal of being a programmer (though his appearance doesn’t help the stereotype). Not everybody is bearish on Barold, with some mounting a defense against the hate he has generated.
How to Find Barold
There are multiple ways to add Barold to your island roster if you don’t mind his presence. One way is through a random visit to your campsite, though this is unlikely as the game has a wide pool of villagers from which it can choose. The most direct way to acquire him is through an Amiibo card. With his Amiibo card, you can head to the Resident Services building where a Nook Stop kiosk inside can be used to scan an Amiibo card and figure. This will allow you to invite him directly to your campsite. Bear in mind that this will require several days as he will not immediately join, as was the case in prior games.
Other methods exist outside of Amiibos if you wish to avoid spending real money. If your island has a free plot of land available, you can try to scout the bear cub on a Mystery Island. This will require using Nook Miles Tickets and heading on tours via the airport. While it is feasible to find Barold on one of these tours, it is random whether he will found meandering at the location. If none of the above options will work, perhaps the most direct way to find our controversial friend would be to seek out online communities and negotiate with another player willing to let him loose.
Can You Bear Barold?
Barold is not exactly the most popular villager in Animal Crossing: New Horizons for a variety of reasons. But everybody has different tastes and what may be ugly to some is cute to others. It is difficult to conceive of any character in one of these games deserving any level of vitriol. Regardless, the range of options and personalities is what makes this series so appealing to a wide audience; there is something for everyone. Some people gravitate towards the trendy villagers while others like darker or cooler characters. If you want to lay bare your love for Barold, seek him out and go nuts. If you do, you might want to consider gifting him some new clothes and furniture.
