Monster Hunter (MH) is filled with different types of monsters, the strongest being called Elder Dragons, but the highest and scariest are called Black Dragons. Let take a dive into some of the lore.
What is an Elder Dragon?
To understand a Black Dragon, we must understand what an Elder Dragon is. Elder Dragons are powerful monsters that the skilled and tough hunters even fall to but can be conquered. They are normally hunted as a sort of “endgame” for the games. Some are hunted at a low rank, others are hidden until you hit a high rank, or above, depending on the game you play. But all are meant to be the strongest of the strong.
They are defined by their ecosystem and they even define the ecosystem themselves. But just like regular monsters they are hunted to keep a balance, if one were to gain too much imbalance they are to be eliminated for they are considered unnatural. For a recent example, Nergigante in MH World was devouring too many Elder Dragons becoming stronger and changing the ecosystem with it.
Usually, if an Elder Dragon appears, the ecosystem is to be disrupted and the Elder Dragon is to be hunted and killed before it can start to change anything. However, there are ones that can strike the fear in any Hunter. These monsters are classified as “Legends” in the MH world, in a standard tongue they are Black Dragons.
What are Black Dragons?
Black Dragons are first-class Elder Dragons. Usually defined by their unnatural presence and defined powers. They are very dangerous and are to be killed on sight or run away from if you should encounter one. There are currently five known dragons with records;
- Alatreon – In a Hunter’s words it is called the Avatar of MH because it can use every element considering it to be unnatural. It is said to cause storms since it cannot fully control its powers causing it to have to release it and devastate its surroundings. It stores its powers in its length horn, should you ever encounter one, its horns are a priority! Without them, they can not shift powers and remain dormant for a time.
- Dire Miralis – A semi-aquatic Elder Dragon in whose body is like magma, using its weight in its wings and feet to crush its enemies. Its body temperature is so high, that water is said to boil around it as it swims. It a very aggressive and territorial known to attack islands for no reason.
- Fatalis – Is known as a terrifying Black Dragon. It and Dire Miralis share the same body type: A long slender body, Long neck, four legs, and two wings. It looks like a European Dragon. Fatalis is a very strong and extremely dangerous dragon. The Black Dragon has been known to wipe out squads of hunters with ease. Its flames can melt even metal. Fatalis has been told that it has wiped out kingdoms with its power.
There are a couple of other versions or pieces of Fatalis known as Crimson and White Fatalis, Crimsion has the natural ability to use lava with its attack while White uses red lightning in his attacks like some of Elden Ring’s dragons. While we know a few of the Black Dragons, most of the info on them is lost to their history or to the hunters that don’t return from their quests against the monsters.
Final Thoughts
Monster Hunter is not afraid to make their lore for their monsters, even so, Black Dragons aren’t seen as an easy encounter for anything and should be proceeded with caution and careful planning. With Monster Hunter Wild being revealed and shown off now, it only makes me excited to if Fatalis, Dire Miralis, or even a new black dragon will appear.
