The Final Fantasy series has many recurring weapons that players look forward to finding. Most are simply known for their power, offering high damage or access to special abilities. Some of them, though, have unique effects that make them more interesting. One example is the Brave Blade. First appearing in Final Fantasy V, this sword can be powerful when wielded properly. However, it is more than just a high-strength weapon. Its unique properties enforce a particular playstyle, making it notable amongst other options in the game. What exactly makes this sword so special?
Are You a Chicken?
Players looking for the Brave Blade must be adept at hunting for secrets in the classic 2D Final Fantasy style. Late in Final Fantasy V, when (spoilers) the two worlds have been merged together, the sword may be found in the town of Moore. A secret unmarked passageway exists to the left of the inn, which players must follow before turning down. This will lead them to two barrels and a forest entrance. Following a secret path into the nearby woods (down, right, down, left, up, right, down) will lead the player to two chests and a question: Are you brave or a chicken? Chickens will get the aptly named Chicken Knife, while courageous folk get the Brave Blade.
A Unique Effect
The Brave Blade and the Chicken Knife yield opposite effects. While the latter gets stronger the more the player flees from battle, the former only holds its strength so long as the player never flees. If one finishes every battle they start, the Brave Blade will have the single highest damage of any sword in the game. However, even one flight from battle will weaken the sword quite a bit. In the Pixel Remaster version of Final Fantasy V, though, fighting more battles with the sword will gradually restore its strength. Thus, it is up to the player to decide if the path of the chicken is more enticing than the path of the warrior.
An Iconic Blade
Unlike other recurring weapons, the Brave Blade hasn’t been reused in very many games after its introduction in Final Fantasy V. As such, it remains an iconic weapon for its protagonist Bartz, frequently depicted as his ultimate weapon. It does appear in Final Fantasy XI as a weapon for Paladins, or as equipment in many mobile games. It almost always features as a weapon specifically for Bartz, however, when it does make its appearance. The red and gold blade provides a striking visual, making it different from many of the ultimate weapons wielded by other Final Fantasy protagonists.
Conclusion
While being a relatively easy weapon to obtain, the Brave Blade challenges players to never flee from a battle if they want it to be useful. In practice, this can prove frustrating, as sometimes a fight is not challenging but is still a bother to sit through and deal with. Players who find themselves always taking on battles for their scant rewards, however, will find the Brave Blade quite helpful in the endgame. Final Fantasy V features many unique builds and powerful optional weapons as compared to other games in the franchise. Perhaps we will see it return in a future game, providing strength to those who take on every challenge given to them.
