Looking for a cheesy new character on your island? Meet Broccolo, an endearing mouse villager in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. The Animal Crossing series is illustrious for its huge cast of quirky characters. Some of these NPCs, known as villagers, play an important part in the daily gameplay loop. Villagers bring personality and life to your island, offering unique interactions and experiences. Here is all you need to know about one such villager, Broccolo.
Who is Broccolo?
Broccolo is a blue mouse villager first introduced in Doubutsu no Mori e+. Doubutsu no Mori e+ was a Japanese-exclusive Gamecube game that expanded upon the original Animal Crossing. Players outside of Japan would meet the mouse for the first time in City Folk for the Nintendo Wii. Broccolo has a lazy personality, making him somewhat eccentric. He is the only lazy mouse currently available in New Horizons. The only other lazy mouse in the series, Chico, has been unavailable since the first-generation games. Broccolo’s birthday is on June 30, making him a Cancer. He shares his birthday with another lazy villager, a duck named Weber.
Broccolo’s depiction is very childlike, fitting given his personality. The décor of his house is filled with colorful block furniture and playground items like the elephant slide. This was further emphasized in previous titles as his initial shirt was the kiddie tee; in New Horizons, it was changed to the raglan shirt. Playing into this characterization is his haircut: a brown set of strands in a bowl-cut style. His name likely stems from broccoli, though it’s not quite clear why. It could be a joke emphasizing stereotypical childhood disdain for the vegetable, playing into his character. Now that you know who Broccolo is, here’s how you can invite him to your island.
How to Get Broccolo
If you would like to invite the childlike mouse to your island, there are a plethora of options available to you. If you have an open spot on your island, Broccolo can be a random villager at your campsite. This is improbable, though, as the game will choose from its gigantic roster of characters when selecting a camper. An alternative way to find him is via his Amiibo card, originally released in Series 2. Head inside the Resident Services building and scan the card at the Nook Stop terminal. This will allow you to invite him directly to the campsite. Remember that this method will require multiple days of effort as he will not immediately join your island.
You can discover the blue mouse in other ways. The airport allows you to go on Mystery Island tours in exchange for Nook Mile Tickets. While villagers can be found on these tours, they suffer the same randomness as the campsite. A quicker path to take would be to peruse one of the many fan forums and communities for the game and see if anyone is willing to trade with him. Broccolo is one of the more middling villagers in terms of popularity, so he will cost a pittance compared to others.
Of Mice and Men
Broccolo is a rather cute villager that will appeal to some people. In New Horizons, he has the play hobby and can often be found running around your plaza with his arms extended backward. While not the most popular character, he is far from the most hated. Lazy villagers can be hit or miss for some players due to their strange affects and bizarre conversations. But many find them appealing and enjoy their strange quirks that sometimes evolve into meta commentaries of the game. Broccolo’s cute appearance and demeanor can be a delightful addition to your island. If you’re on the hunt for him, bring some cheese and mousetraps with you.
