In less than two weeks, Nintendo will rerelease the sequel to the cult classic Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD. In between the original game’s status as a classic, the recent release of the sequel, and the end of the 3DS era, many sadly overlooked this title. Despite this, the game is a solid title and entry into the Mario franchise.
Since 2013, many gamers have sadly forgotten about this entry in the Mario franchise. With the game’s re-release, it will almost certainly gain a new appreciation. Here is a breakdown of what Nintendo fans should know about Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD.
The Basics of the Game
According to Nintendo’s Website, Luigi’s Mansion 2 will enter the market on June 27, 2024. The game will cost $59.99 and will be exclusively for the Nintendo Switch. The announcement was initially made on March 10, Mario Day itself. The game itself is a sequel to the original Luigi’s Mansion, released a decade prior. The game follows Luigi as he must return to his ghost-hunting profession alongside Prof. E. Gadd to save Evershade Valley from King Boo.
The game adds many new features to the original title. Whereas the first game was confined to the titular mansion, Luigi explores an entire town’s worth of haunted locales this time around. As expected from a sequel, the game adds new enemy types players must figure out how to defeat, tools to solve puzzles, and gimmicks for each level to keep players invested. Finally, the DS touchscreen opened up many possibilities for the game.
Luigi’s Mansion 2, Not the Original Title
The first thing to know about Luigi’s Mansion 2 is that it was not initially titled so, at least not in North America. In the NA region, the game was titled Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon. This refers to the eponymous MacGuffin that drives the story and that Luigi must reassemble throughout the game. The game’s name was likely changed for consistency, as Luigi’s Mansion 3 was titled as such worldwide.
The Luigi’s Mansion trilogy highlights why we love Luigi so much as a character. He goes beyond just being “green Mario” and has an entertainingly neurotic personality. Even if he himself has no dialogue in these games, his expressive movements make him an endearing protagonist to watch. Furthermore, these games highlight how an homage to another work (Ghostbusters) can still carve out its own identity in a new genre.
Other Important Features
While this will, by all means, bring the original title to the Switch, Nintendo will add many other features to spice things up. It goes without saying that as an HD remaster, the graphics will be enhanced to the gorgeous standards of the Switch. Naturally, because the Switch only has one screen, the gameplay was adjusted accordingly, such as when Nintendo put the minimap in the top corner. While the 2-screen nature of the 3DS made its titles unique, it poses a challenge in porting these titles elsewhere.
Other gameplay features should excite players, not the least of which is multiplayer. Much like Legend of Zelda: Four Swords, the game lets teams of four multi-colored Luigis explore a tower known as the “ScareScraper” to fight off ghouls. With the enhanced online features of the Switch, players should have no difficulty finding a team. While the game may not make many huge changes, it will be a blast from the past for hardcore Nintendo fans.
